Title: Tulsa vs Green House Gasses
Post by: MichaelC on May 15, 2007, 03:50:58 PM
From KOTV (//%22http://kotv.com/news/local/story/?id=127363%22)

quote:
TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Tulsa is becoming the 500th city in the nation to formally promise to cut greenhouse gas emissions that lead to global warming. The pledge calls for the city to cut it's carbon dioxide pollution and is based on an international agreement called the Kyoto Protocol. That agreement addresses global warming and has been signed by 166 national governments, but not by the United States.

Tulsa joins Norman as the Oklahoma cities that have signed the agreement.

Good.  Hopefully they will buy biodiesel for their vehicles which use diesel.

So is there a plan -- are we going to "discover" that Tulsa has an energy ordinance on the books that we've largely ignored?

so are we going to start capturing the methane off of our land fill and make it available to those of us who drive CNG powered vehicles?

The one on 46th St. North uses a flare tower, I believe.  I don't know what it would take to harness that.

I'm just now wrapping up my involvement in a COT project for a pasteurizer at the NWWTP which will burn either digester gas or natural gas in a hot water system.  Problem with some, uh, waste gasses is they are wet and corrosive with high sulfur dioxide content, likely not practical for CNG automotive use.

Fine DM...here it is...and for those who are wondering RM and DM are not related, we just argue like we are.

Would it have killed you to look for yourself this once?

Yes, as a matter of fact it would have. And then you would be sad. You know you would.

The report shows that electrical spending for streetlights doubled between 2003 and 2006, and yet there is no mention of any plan to deal with this in the above report.

Meanwhile, here's what we already have on the books -- interesting to see what's been followed through on and what has not:

Title 12, Chapter 1.
SECTION 101. POLICY STATEMENT AND POLICY GOALS
C. To implement its energy policy, the City shall exercise due diligence in all of its operations, programs and activities, including but not limited to the successful achievement of the following goals:
   10. Develop an ordinance to require outdoor lighting in new areas of development that reduces unwanted and/or unnecessary light pollution
Ord. Nos. 20188, 20546, July 13 2001

SECTION 102. POLICY OBJECTIVES
B. Lighting
Energy-efficient street and security lighting shall be considered and installed, whenever and wherever economically feasible and appropriate.
Street and outdoor lighting wattage shall be reduced and lighting directed downward, whenever and wherever feasible and appropriate.
Ord. Nos. 20188, 20546, July 13 2001
