The City of Tulsa is looking for volunteers for an "Illegal Sign Blitz" May 19-20. The Mayor is getting tough on this blight and wants to get rid of the illegal signs before the PGA is in town.
It's part of a national "Sick of Signs" campaign sponsored by the American Association of Code Enforcement.
Personally, I am thrilled. The new sign inspector is going to put some teeth into the existing laws. I met her yesterday. She's young, smart and up for the task. She is collecting phone numbers and names from signs, sending them information about our sign laws, then fining them if they do it again.
To volunteer, contact the Mayor's Action Line or code enforcement.
Does anyone know if the sign on Riverside (around 26th--real estate auction) is illegal? It is huge, distracting, and, IMO, dangerous.
Sorry to be off-topic. I think the Mayor's idea is great.
It's probably against code. That's not off topic, that is one of the many problems with signs. Too big, blocking you view of traffic, placed on the right of way, rather than private property.
BikerFox and Paul Tay could join.
I think that is a bad weekend for getting help with Mayfest, blue dome, edge birthday, and a dozen other things all going on downtown.
This is good news, it'll be nice to have some corners free of signs. Like sgrizzle said though, that may be a busy weekend to try to do something like this.
Well, it's a national campaign so the timing was decided by the AACE. I'd rather pick up signs than go to Mayfest anyway.

Well that's fine, I'm sure you will enjoy yourself picking up signs. I'll appreciate it and maybe I can pick some up during my travels that weekend.
I'm going after the nearest billboard.
Down with signs!
*Gasp* Are you suggesting that people should NOT go downtown during the single biggest downtown draw of the year? You're a suburbanite aren't you?
[:D]
They should've spent their money to get Bob Barker at Mayfest. 35th year for Price is Right, 35th year for Mayfest.
Suburbanite? Ha!
I've always been a Midtown Girl.
Here's the deets on the sign blitz:
Show up to volunteer at one of these locations:
Uniform Division East (11th street just west of Highway 169 next to QT
Uniform Division Southwest (75th and Riverside)
Tulsa Fairgrounds Gate 12 (off 21st Street)
Volunteers will receive a little safety training then head out with city inspectors to remove signs. Signs will be placed in Dumpsters at the stated locations. Inspectors will be on hand from 9-5 at all locations. You don't have to volunteer all day. Just do what you can to help Keep Tulsa Beautiful! I would suggest getting an early start.
If you have any questions or would like to get your neighborhood association involved, call Sharun McLemore at 261-9288.
bikerfox should be required to remove everything from 101st/71st st median since he illegally uses the median this can be his amnesty.
"Show up to volunteer at one of these locations..."
Are badges going to be handed out?
What about corrupt Signdistas that use their power to bully the neighbors in their hood, demand protection money against other Singdinistas?
Is it just Uniform Division or can one volunteer for I.A.D.?
I'd prefer undercover.
Can Signdinistas enjoy adult refreshing beverages while on foot patrol?

Just chainsaws.

That's what the chainsaws are for.

You'll stick out like a sore thumb, with your chainsaw.

Just be careful with your chainsaw.
Yeah yeah yeah, that and how to look both way before crossing the street, or approaching people in spandex was covered in the first semester Signdinista School.
Guess you busy making Underoo scribles in your text book during that but I wasn't:
"Always have a PSO/AEP hard hat on hand to don as a disguise." - pg. 27, 62.
You must have me mistaken for someone else. My textbook is the one loaded with little spaceships fighting.
Ever wonder if the Cylons would have a chance against Stormtroopers? I have.
Oh yeah, the little nerdy guy stting behind me, kicking the back of my chair, always raising his hand to go pee, flunked out 2nd semester.
How you been, Dude?
End of Thread Hijack.
I have a deal at Bluedome.
I do pluck lawn signs every chance I get.
Thinking signshops should hand out a code sheet with every order that informs the client of the City signage code.
So a guy drives around snapping photos of illegal signs, shotgunner gets out and removes said sign, and another guy back at the cube calls the number on the sign.
Person called gets hit with a costly ticket as described on the handout.
Moi 2 cents, jdb
I heard from a friend today that she saw 5 or 6 city employees out today pulling down "stopthechop" signs in yards along 21st street. She stopped to ask them why, and they responded that they signs were in the right of way. Other citizens were not as friendly as my friend--while talking to the employees, another person stopped and began screaming at the employees to put the signs back. When my friend got home, she called the mayor's action line to complain. I guess someone got through, because I just drove down 21st, and all of the signs remain, but have been moved back out of the right of way.
We all want to see laws enforced. But I don't think this was the best way to start.
It bothered me that the lady trying to save trees was putting signs in the right-of-way.
She is a nice lady and goes to my church, but that is no excuse for breaking the law and making the street look ugly.

I've seen him pulling signs out of the medians. He wanted to discuss his hatred of median signage with me.
How about we put out a bunch of signs that say "stop the signs."
Stop the Chop lady is basically littering - A litterbug tree hugger.
"A litterbug tree hugger"
Criminal most foul!
