I was just thinking how absolutely embarrassing some of our convenience store names are and was wondering what names you have seen in Oklahoma. Quicktrip seems pretty normal, but Kum-n-Go is horrible. Git-n-Go when it was here was bad enough but Kum-n-Go is worse.
I forgot most of the ones I have seen but another one towards Okmulgee called Git-n-Scram made me laugh.
You realize this isn't a Tulsa/Oklahoma phenomenon, right?
I'm pretty sure Kum N Go is an Iowa-based company, for example.

I'm pretty sure that we have our own fair share of strange names. Regardless of their origins, you can be sure to find a lot of these names here in Okie land. My wife was at a Kum-n-Go not too long ago and told someone on the phone who is from California that she was at the Kum-n-Go. The person on the other end said, "You're at the WHAT?" We try to get others away from the "Okie from Muskogee" mentality where there's nothing but cows and stagecoaches and yet we have had chains called "Git-n-Go". This doesn't help our image any.
Besides, I would rather have a 7-11 than a Git-n-Scram any day.
I loved the U-Totem name, complete with the totem pole sign.

I've heard before that Tulsa has more convenience stores per capita than any other US city. I can't remember the source, but I'm inclined to believe it. Kum-n-go is actually a late arrival to Tulsa. They already have them all over KS and MO. It grosses me out, too.
Oh but my favorite is the Get-R-Done tree service that used to have little signs all over town. A friend's out-of-town sister saw them and asked "What exactly does Get "R" Done mean?" We had a good laugh.
I'm sure there are a lot of people who wonder if Oklahoman's know how to spell i.e. Little roadside eateries like Karol's Kountry Kitchen...
Kum and Go is in 13 states. It has stores in Des Moines, Omaha, Kansas City, Wichita, Little Rock, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Madison as well as Tulsa and OKC.
I agree that the name is regrettable, but that it makes Tulsa look bad is a bit of a stretch. Would they think more of us if you told them you were at "Super Gas Auto Mart" or some other made up fancy place?
btw. In my college town we called it "the jerk and quirt." Ya' know, because of the squishy machines.
Yes, Kum-N-Go is a recent "treat" to come to town and I think the forumers were generally less than pleased with the name then. In stillwater they have a "Git-N-Gallup" which is more entertaining than the "A-1 Git-N-Scram" here in town.
Here is the latest one I saw the other day...Kum-Kwik and Go....
I was on a business trip in Iowa several years ago and saw a Kum and Go for the first time and just started laughing at the name. I actually pulled over and took a picture to prove to my wife that such a place existed, the joke possibilities are endless.
And not two or three years later Kum and Go bought Git n Go and here we are. I'm sure there are visitors to Tulsa that do exactly the same thing that I did.
Quik Trip is the Taj Mahal of convenience stores.
I see one of our newest members is KGo blogger.
http://www.myspace.com/kumandgoblog
Welcome aboard. We must be famous even in Iowa.
we problaby just showed up on google talking about kum-n-go.
But how can you really complain when we also have "in-n-out" burger?
Story has it that Chester with Quik Trip and the largest convienence store owner in OKC made an agreement years ago not to tread on each others turf.
Could that be why you do not see Quik Trip in OKC?
Anyone know the rest of the story?
My favorite is "Tank and Tummy" out on 412 west of Sand Springs.
Yes, Kum and Go is based in West Des Moines, IA ... I used to live right by it. The name is only wierd if you think of it that way. I never thought anything of it until they bought out Git-n-Go and someone commented on the name.
I think this is kind of a stupid thing to whine about .... there are names like this all over the country.

Do we have an INO Burger in Tulsa yet?
Remember Chevy Chases "in-n-out" line in "Fletch Lives"?
In N Out Burgers are great.
There used to be a burger joint in Muskogee named Burger Run.
Their specialty was a greasy cheeseburger called the Run Burger.
You're killing me with the INO Burger reference.
Those are SO GOOD!
Only ones I know of are in Navada, Arizona and, California. Been to three of them along the AMA GNC circiut when driving the big Custom Chrome Coach over the road.
Their burgers and fries and shakes rule.

Quiktrip also views themself as the "Target" in a land full of wal-marts. Quiktrip recently expanded into some of the nicer areas in dallas and did so with extremely large and nice stores. Plus, they now need easy access to their bakery as they no longer sub out to local bakers.
I found a few QTs in St Loius and as far north as Cedar Rapids Iowa when we produced a Monster Truck show there. Believe there is also one in Kansas City by the Suzuki dealer... Hit one going through Atnalta, Geogia en route to Daytona, Florida. Driven way too many miles over the past few years. LOL
It is like finding an Oasis in the desert when you come upon a QT Sign!!!
There is one at Spring Valley Road exit near Plano off I-75 heading north on the East side, and another in Arlington by Six Flags and the Ball Park.
The Plano one does not have the QT Kitchen Deli, but they do have a large WINE section in its place.
They also sell Krispy Kreme Dougnuts, which may be another name some don't like. LOL

Freddie's Burgers may be as close to an In n Out as it gets in Tulsa.
Try his new location on East 11th by Mingo, they have Char Burgers there.
My favorite name is a store that is/was down by my parent's lake house on Lake Eufaula.
The name?
Quick, Cheap & Easy
Reminded me of a couple of my girlfriends in college.

I don't know how often or if you get to Phoenix, but Quik Trip changed the market out here. Alot of people had never heard of it, and were amazed that a convenience store could be so big and so well run. I had people ask me how do they get a QT franchise and I had to tell them you can't. I know some people that tried to get jobs at QT and were upset when they could not pass the financial background check.
Quik Trip put Circle K on the ropes and forced them to revamp and remodel their stores to compete. It's just so nice to go into a QT and be greeted by clean cut well groomed people, then you go to someplace else and it's the 20 something not married with three kids and the piercings and tatoos.
That and it takes forever to get taken care of at Kum n Go. They should change their name to Swipe-n-Scan.

Agreed! Love the taquitos and other delicious food. Service is great, the stores are clean, the staff are professional and friendly.. The QTs in this area (Fort Worth) are fabulous and put all other convenience stores to shame.

Interesting, since Circle K is, I believe, HQ'd in Phoenix.

I remember hearing that all the time about 15 years ago as well. Convenience stores and restraunts.
I think Tulsa was just ahead of the development curve when it came to the convenience store on every corner, total market saturation of restraunts. Having Quik Trip in town developing their strategy was a main culprit, but just all of the oil and gas companies in town in general (Plus refineries) made Tulsa into an environment of tons of gas stations/stores.
I think through the expansion in the 90s, most places ended up being like Tulsa is now. Every big chain has to have their stores on every corner in the country. So we aren't unique anymore.
The only problem with QT is I have gotten quite ill after eating some of their food. The first time was one of their hot dogs and I think it was because of the bun warmer. That steamy bin is a haven for bacteria.
I also got ill after eating one of their Jalapeno Sausage rolls that made me bed-ridden for at least 20+ hours. I won't be eating anything there with a roll or bun around it.[xx(] As far as their Taquitos go, I have probably eaten more of those than anything. Not because I find them extremely tasty, but more convenient than anything. I would still like a Lamar Sundae though. [:(]

Yes they are. And what they have done to alot of their stores is to paint and polish things to make them nicer on the inside, and alot of them now have walk-in beer coolers. But there are some that when you go into them your almost afraid to touch any thing. The stores that we have here are these:
Circle K
Quik Trip
ampm
7-11
Mobil On The Run
Diamond Shamrock/Valejo
Kwik-E-Marts (old Circle K stores)
and then a bunch of independant stores.
ampm adds a surcharge to all debit transactions of 25 cents, and the stores are not alway the cleanest.
7-11' are a mixed bag, it's either nice or nasty.
Kwik-E-Marts and the other independant stores usually don't sell gas, and charge more than the others.
Mobil on the Run are nice but over priced on food stuff as well as gas, usually 3 to 5 cents higher on gas. The one thing they used to have going for them was they had a Blimpie or Pizza Hut inside for fresh food.
Diamond Shamrock/Valejo is similar to the Citgo Stations, not very big, and usually 3 to 5 cents cheaper on gas.

I've eaten about everything, more than once. Tried QT Pizza yesterday which was pretty good too. Even their fruit cup things are surprisingly good.

I have at home a glass that I won on KRAV back in the mid 80's that is white on the outside with a red QT sign on it. When you put ice and liquid into it a picture of Lamar and paw prints appears bcause of the cold.
"Tanks Lamar"

I still don't understand how self-serve food like taquitos and hot dogs is allowed by the health dept. No telling what someone gets on one of those when they are pawing around trying to find the one they like. I used to get the hot dogs all the time until I really thought about the, uh, public nature of them.
I like the sausage rolls, but you may have scared me off eating another one.

I kid you not. That was what I ate and I got VIOLENTLY ill. Not just a small stomache ache. I was in the bathroom every 10 minutes for over 17 hours of the ordeal. I couldn't sleep and had the worst stomach pain and chills. I didn't realize someone could feel that awful and that was the worst I ever felt. This was just two weeks ago. I'm a little disheartened because I used to eat those about 3-4 times a week on the way to work.
Well, look at it this way, maybe you will get a little less cholesterol in your diet.[8D]
I had a hot ham & cheese sandwich from a Love's down near Altus about 20 years ago that gave me the same symptoms you described. I laid in bed for two days praying God would just kill me and get it over with. [xx(]
QuikTrip has really changed the perception of the convenience store in the markets it serves. Many people actually perceive their gasoline to be of a higher quality than than other gas stations. Most QT employees are actually friendly, and cops frequent QTs to get thier complementary coffee, which makes customers feel safe at night. QT does about the best job of marketing I have ever seen in the convenience store industry. Some QT customers' brand loyalty is so well developed that they will risk running out of gas, passing several other gas stations, in search of QT.

All they need now is to offer barf bags with some of their eats.
OK HERE'S A QUESTION FOR ALL OF YOU:
When you decide to get a Taquito-Pizza Roll-Egg Roll, do you use the filthy tongs or do you use your fingers to pick up the food? I would say that I have for the most part used the tongs. However, there have been times that those tongs were coated in some nasty brown stuff and I admit to carefully picking up a Taquito without touching anything else.
Sounds gross? Try looking at some of those tongs later in the day.[xx(] I feel uneasy doing that if someone sees me like I am contaminating the food or being non-hygienic but its either that or get nothing.
Oh the pressures....
Relax, Rowdy. Perhaps the bacteria-encrusted tongs inoculate you against disease. [}:)]
Seriously, though, QuikTrips pretty much put other convenience stores to shame. The story from dbacks fan equals what I saw in the St. Louis area when QT came in -- it forced the other stores clean up their acts.
My favorite convenience store name: There was a Wag-A-Bag on U.S. 51 in Southern Illinois, in Patoka, I think it was. I'm not sure whether it's still there.

+1.
Quiktrip's service is so good that I haven't even stopped in at a Kum n Go, and probably never will.
What shocks me even further is that people even apply to work there. Quiktrip is supposed to be one of the top 500 companies in the nation to work for, and--unlike Kum and Go--you don't have to feel like a porn-shop attendant when in uniform.

Case in point; the new QT that is in my town of Hurst (Tx) is located on the corner of a major area, but it is a pain in the A__ to get into. For one, you can only enter from one direction only (South to North). I've seen people go through two traffic lights in the opposite direction, passing other convenience stores, only to turn around at the first available opportunity to make the end run into QT. I know because I do this as well. The parking lot of this place is always full, and is about to run the Racetrack up the street out of business.

Ditto for me. I have always heard that, as far back as the mid 1960s, that Tulsa was the convenience store capital of the U.S., more per capita than any other city.
In the 1960s, I remember Git-N-Go, UTottem, and the In-'N-Out (not the burger joint) chains. I don't recall QuikTrip on the scene here until the mid-to-late 1970s.
Don't know why convenience stores are so popular here; the only thing I buy at convenience stores regularly is gasoline. Maybe that's it, the old-fashioned full service filling station with their friendly service, tire & oil check, windshield cleaning, clean rest rooms, and smiling bow-tied attendant has degraded into today's pump it yourself convenience store.
And the good old smell of Regular gasoline.

I really do appreciate that QT is trying to have some healthy stuff at their stores. People complain about how hard it is to have a healthy diet when most places only have junk snacks. I know I find it irritating to be on the road and not be able to find a quick healthy snack and not something that will kill you. (like a jalepeno sausage roll...good gawd lol) They have apples, banannas, fruit cups, some decent sandwiches etc.
The other day I saw this mom and a couple of her pudgy sickly looking kids in the QT near me picking out a bag full of donuts for breakfast. I wished I could have called someone and had her kids taken away from her for being an irresponsible parent. There were banannas, lowfat milk and other things right there. Right There! Its not as though they didn't have a choice or that it would have cost more. I am still baffled by that type of behavior.
But luckily juuuust down the street they are building this new CancerDiagnostic and Diabetes Center.

I just hope QT is able to make a profit selling those healthy alternatives. AKA I hope enough people actually buy that stuff and not just the junk food, so that they will keep carying it for those of us who appreciate having it there.

I'm sorry but there was nothing like washing a Jalapeno Sausage Cheese Roll with a Mountain Dew to start your day.
What irritates me is the zoning restriction on new stores. There are two buildings at union and brady which would make great neighbourhood stores, but I bet you couldn't use them due to zoning restrictions. Instead the only place to go is gas stations.

yes, QTs kitchen selections or whatever just helped Tulsa's sewers become more toxic.

I figure that stuff actually eats all the other stuff in the sewers.
They are really pushing the QT kitchens. There was a big article in the paper today. They are taking free food into larger corporations to introduce it to the masses.
They definitely put a huge investment in it, remodeling all the stores to install the QTK kiosks. In some cases, they've even had to move the check out counters.
I've always been amazed at how quick they put up a store, but even more amazed at how they can do a remodel so quickly and keep the store operating.
Someone told me one time that QT uses a formula of profitability or gross revenue per square foot in determining a store's success. Anyone know if that is correct?
I remember UTOTEM and Circle K, and yes, even 7-11.

They are all over KC. They are at least as common in KC as they are in Tulsa.
I think some of QT's brand loyalty starts really young. Does anyone else remember being told in elementary school that QT was a "safe place?" I remember the schools telling us that if you get kidnapped or lost, and make it to a QT to call for help, they'll give you a free slushy drink. And since they're on every corner, in highschool that's where you walk to to meet your friends before driving around all night.

Most profitible retailers with any size do this to keep the bottom line in line. Walmart definitely does this type of analysis.
In PA, there is a chain of convenience stores
called "sheetz". Privately owned, these stores are GREAT. Always clean, good people, and fresh food prepared instore.
You go inside, and order via touch screen menus, and it prints off your order. By the time you use the restroom and grab that Diet Dr Pepper, your order is ready waiting for you at the register. Very good quality food.
QT is very good - but Sheetz is GREAT.
Then of course, there is the small store in rural MO that has in its window a big banner that says "HO-MADE PIES".

QT still participates in the "safeplace" program and like you said, the abundance of locations makes them an easy place to find.

I'm impressed with some QT expansion where really old stores were expanded. They have actually built a new store just a foot or so behind the old store and then moved into the new building. All the while, keeping the store open.
Quik-Trip joints are always busy. if ya wanna get rich buy into a Quik Trip joint... They do not market in the midwest however, up here in Ohio we have places like "SpeedWay" and "B.P." Fuel is getting nearer to that big $4.00 mark every week. At work we have a betting pool of when fuel will hit the $4.00 mark. By next summer most everyone thinks we'll have $4.00 a gallon fuel. Funny thing is oil is only $62.00 a barrel currently, but we don't have the refineries or capacity to process that oil into fuel so the price keeps going up, thanks to the enviromental wackos who fight to keep them from being built. Gasoline is like food we ned it to live it's not a lux. item...

You can't "buy into a Quik Trip joint". QuikTrips are company-owned and operated.

It's not so much lack of refining capacity as it is oil companies have sported large cajones and are pretty well charging whatever they want for their finished project. Even if 15 new refineries went on line tomorrow, I'd bet we'd still be paying the same for gas because: "We have to adjust fuel prices to re-coup our massive capital investment in new refineries."
I cannot see any justification for the fuel prices being as high as they are, other than an absolute fleecing of the public and collusion amongst the large refiners.
