Bixby Looking At Its Own Low-Water Dam
Bixby - Sand Springs and Jenks are already getting low-water dams to keep the river flowing. Now, the City of Bixby wants to dam up the Arkansas River. It would be located between Mingo and Garnett and it could mean more development in Oklahoma's fastest growing city.
Folks in Bixby say they're very serious about their own low-water dam to keep water in the river and enhance economic development. The dam is more feasible now that a sand company announced that it is moving downstream, somewhere close to the Arkansas River and Garnett. Mayor Ray Bowen says it would impact development.
"We've got a lot of land along the river that will be able to be developed," Bowen says. "Of course, the big thing is we want a little water in the river for beautification purposes out in the river."
He says the dam in Bixby won't be as elaborate as those in Sand Springs and Jenks.
"We're talking about a dam that is called a break away dam, which would collapse depending on the amount of pressure put in," he says. "If we had a heavy rain, the dam would go down and let all that water out."
People in Bixby says they think they can make it happen in the next three to five years. The dam will cost around 25-million dollars. But, with local, state and federal help, they think they can get it done.
This would be great.
Kinda sad if bixby gets done first. Especially when Tulsa has funding and a 3 year head start.
Since waterboy isn't here anymore I'll say this:
They should use some alternate form of water level control other than a low water dam like wing dams.
What becomes of Tulsa's "Wave", considered one of the Top Ten Kayaking places in the World, the round one, not the paper.

Bixby would have to build a dam the size of Keystone in order for the water to back all the way up to the Tulsa Wave lol. [:P] Bixby wants to build a "low-water" dam, not the Hoover dam. [;)]

Isn't that about 12 miles away. Even the jenks dam isn't supposed to effect this.
