Despite stereotypes of the South as a region struggling with race issues, the Salama family experienced limited discrimination. Salama remembers only a few incidents when people shouted ethnic slurs and believes they were isolated occurrences. Isn't there also a very popular Islamic rapper making the circuits too?
On a local note, we spent last Friday night at Sr. Tequila at Harvard and 51st. The entertainment was three Mexican guitarists singing old plantation songs and country western with a Mexican accent and guitar flourishes. It was great! They were having as much fun as we were, singing "When those cotton balls get rotten, you can't pick very much cotton..." with Mexican flair.
Good margaritias too.
