Oklahomans To Decide Quarter Design
AP - 4/11/2007 12:11 PM OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)
Gov. Brad Henry is asking Oklahomans in the next two weeks to select the design for a special commemorative quarter honoring the state. Votes can be cast over the Internet or through the mail. Voting will begin Friday at 5 p.m. and conclude at 5 p.m. on April 27.
The quarter will be issued by the U.S. Mint early next year. It is part of a special series launched in 1999.
Hundreds of designs were submitted by Oklahomans last year and two committees agreed on 10 finalists. Henry then asked Oklahomans to choose the five finalists that were then submitted to the Treasury Department.
Those designs, finalized by the Mint, include representations of the Pioneer Woman; gushing oil derricks; the scissortail flycatcher, the state bird; and an Indian peace pipe.
``In the year of Oklahoma's centennial celebration, it is only appropriate that the people of our great state have the final say on our special commemorative quarter,'' the governor said.
``Oklahoma is a literal and figurative crossroads of America, a place where we honor past traditions but look to the future with optimism and confidence,'' he said. ``Our state signifies so many wonderful things, it's a tall order to distill that down to a single design for a quarter.
``I believe Oklahomans know best about what image is most fitting for our state, and so I encourage all Oklahomans to vote for their favorite quarter design.''
Again, Oklahomans can vote for their favorite quarter designs via www.ok.gov starting on Friday.
I plan to vote on Friday. This quarter can help our state's image or can make us look like hicks. My fear was that our state quarter was going to be two nickels and a dime duct-taped together (and only twenty cents).
RM, went to the state web site and could not find a link that shows the designs. Someone had posted them awhile back on here. Anyone else have a good link they can post?

How about this one:

You could entitle it "Oklahoma: We'll cash your social security check for you at the border"
I already submitted my personal rendition awhile back...

Hey! That's Wilbur on that coin!
I thought the first vote was the only one. Well, at least we have a better idea of what they look like, as opposed to those scribbles of the original vote. I have to say, though, the cow coin is the best I've seen.
I had my own idea, but proper decorum prevents me from posting it. [:I]
Too bad John Kerry isn't an Oklahoman, he could be on both sides.
I vote for the peace pipe one. I think the winner should have a prominent Native American theme and this is the only one that seems to come close. They are all pretty mediocre, in my opinion.
I like the last one. State outline, Pioneer Woman, Peace Pipe. I agree the peace pipe needs to be there. Some of the others, try to show too much value or look cluttered - they will look washed out on a coin.
my design for the teenage pregnant meth head sitting out in front of the governor's mansion didn't make it.

At first I was tempted to decide between the usual "oil well, pioneer woman, state, pipe, etc" variations. But found that I kept being drawn to the scissortail. I started to realize that one of the others would have been an analytical choice with the usual litany of symbolic facts and I would be trying to figure out which combination was more important to state. But that scissortail, just felt nice, peaceful, serene, beautiful. Something you could look at and feel proud of, or just enjoy looking at. Not a conglomeration of symbols representing this or that.
I voted for #2, the Scissortail. #3 or 5 would have been a second choice.

I agree #2 is the best choice.
Oklahoma isn't that known for oil anymore. And until we stop promoting the 'cowboys and indians' theme that keeps getting thrown in front of everybody, how do we expect people to know Oklahoma has moved past cowboys and indians? I agree we have a great past and 'the west' is part of that past. But too many people still come to this state looking for teepees and can't believe we have traffic lights! Lets start promoting ourselves with something else!

btw, before Scotty, I didnt realize Vietnamese people could look sleezy.
The Scissortail coin is by far the nicest coin. Coin 3 isn't terrible, but I'm not sure I want pioneer settlers on our coin and most of the other designs have that. My thing is this... is there a state in the union that couldn't but pioneer settlers on their coin? We all had them at some point!!!
The oil derrick isn't a bad thing as energy in general is still our largest commodity.
I think coin 2 or 3 will probably win.
While pioneer woman might be appropriate, it does nothing for our state's image, IMO. When I think of Oklahoma, I don't think of a pioneer woman! I think about how beautiful our state is and the Indian Paintbrush flowers and Scissortail Flycatcher capture that.
#2 FTW!
2 is the favorite of the coin collectors.
It isnt my favorite because most people wouldnt know what it was. If they saw that bird they wouldnt think of Oklahoma (and many here probably dont know it is the state bird). How lame would it have been if every state put its state bird on the coin?
Unfortunately, the other coins seem cluttered. The pioneer woman, while ubiquitous, is more apt to Oklahoma because it was more recent than most and a large migration. It went from closed... to open. The oil and wheat are also good symbols of our state... but adding them all together with a relief of the state and it gets a little cluttered.
I'm not a huge fan of any of the designs. None of them seem as cool as many that are already out and certainly are not in the running for coolest over all.
I vote for #3.

hy do four of those designs seem to have a feminist theme to them?
They couldn't put any men on the designs,I know women and children were not the only ones who settled in Oklahoma.I guess I am voting for the design #2.

I don't think putting women on coins means that they have a feminist theme. I mean how many coins on your pocket have a woman on them? Plus that woman just seems like a normal settler hardly an feminist.
Chuck Norris was born in Oklahoma. Why can't he be on the Quarter?

Because he's hiding in the boogey man's closet.
I voted for #2 the scissortail. I see scissortails out by my work alot. I wish there was some kind of image that could be on the quarter from the last fifty years of Oklahoma's past.
The bird won the vote by a land slide!

Well of course the bird won by a landslide, the others were all too similar. Kinda like if you have four Democrats running against one Republican without having a primary, the Republican is obviously going to have an advantage.
Plus, there was the last minute pioneer woman w/o her book controversy.
Oklahoma gives you the bird.

Your theory doesn't work here because the four other quarters got less than half the votes combined.
The bird quarter was the overwhelming choice.
Here is my problem... when someone in Minnesota, California, or anywhere BUT Oklahoma looks at that quarter they are not going to think "Oklahoma." For that matter, many people in Oklahoma probably cannot name our state bird. Its boring and says little about the state... no way I would find the Oklahoma quarter and think it was neat.
Between the similarity of the other choices and the "scandal" of no bible (which caused many religous groups to encourage their members to vote for the damn bird), it was guaranteed a winner from day 1.
LAME.
I don't feel too bad since many of the state quarters seem lame. How is it we have two different quarters that both say "birthplace of aviation?"
Many states have little more than a state outline.
The Wright brothers were born in Ohio but flew their plane in North Carolina. Thus, both claim aviation was 'born' there... one biologically and one technically.
I understand the history, it's the fact the same thing verbatim is on two coins. Technically one is the home of the first aviators and the other is the site of the first aviation. The wright brothers' heads are the birthplace of aviation. (If you believe they were the first)
I no longer consider Oklahoma my home, having been gone for years. That being said, it should be something intrinsic to Oklahoma, like Rodeo, or the Meth-Head.
I always thought it would show something land-run related, I was so wrong. It sucks, but most of the state quarters do. It could of been alot worse.

Then North Carolina is the birthplace of aviation.
