Title: Tulsa World Repeat
Post by: sportyart on April 09, 2007, 11:35:34 PM
Have you ever noticed that so many of the threads that are opened on tulsanow forums are nothing more then stories that are in the Tulsa World? I mean, there are so many other problems that are out there then what the World reports on. For example, I can't tell you how many pot holes that I hit not only on city streets, but also on the bridges that we have in our fair city. Far be it for me, a lonely citizen of this state to make the point that all the taxes that we have colleted over the years for city streets and highways have gone for not.

I mean, come on people, we got real problems, think about them and shout out!

"...a lonely citizen..."

Lonely or lowly or both?

Is this where I complain about the high number of ants in every city park I visit?

A lot of news is discussed here. Some from TulsaWorld, some from KOTV, and some are here before any news agency knows about it.

I think we have a pothole related thread about every 2-3 months here.

You have to keep in mind that the pothole problem is constantly over-saturated with news focus. Then they drop the subject for a time. I am positive that news agencies will go back to the topic when they feel its time.

Frankly, the downgrade of the TPS are more important than potholes. I mean, we (at Tulsa Now) spent quite a bit of time suggesting to a potential mover to consider living in South Tulsa, in areas of the city covered by different public school districts than the TPS. Obviously the TPS has a bad reputation for quality of education. THAT needs to end.

It still shocks me that people think the World is liberal. It's not even close

You should hear what people say about Tulsa in private.  It's not kind.  But we love her, loyal opposition, etc.

Hey Swake, the world, or at least this corner of it, has been more liberal before and will be more liberal again.

What's going on now is anything but conservative.  The last real conservative was Gerald Ford.  Almost every prominent Republican from Reagan forward has been a radical with an activist agenda.

Could it be that we stand at the passing of an era?  Reagan's revolution rings hollow now and seems to be falling apart.  What's missing so far is a leader who can articulate a new liberal point of view.

Meanwhile I don't envy Republicans with their religious nuts and the greedy.

I am guilty of starting threads with a Tulsa World story for everyone to comment on. I know it is a lazy way to begin a conversation, but they often include most of the pertinent facts necessary to begin to discuss topics.

The Tulsa World is a powerful force in public perception and discussing their coverage has lead again and again to very spirited and informed postings by many of the members of TulsaNow. I do consider TulsaNow forums to be a media source and discussing other media does sometimes feel like Geraldo Rivera discussing Rush Limbaugh.

I'll try to stop, but the next Tulsa World story I think we should discuss on TulsaNow will probably overwhelm my judgement and lead to me copying it again.

To me, complaining about potholes is like complaining about taxes.  No matter where you live, you think yours are the worst.  I did notice that after all our freezing weather, they were much worse in some areas than they had been before, but I"m going to give the city time to address them properly before I get mad about it.  I think using the TUlsa World as a conversation starter is only natural since it's our largest newspaper....if we only talked about things that we observed on our own, we'd probably be limited to things like potholes since most people on here dont' work for developers or have inside information on projects in the works.

I think the posting of Tulsa World stories is fine, it furthers the conversation about the community and often you get perspectives and insight not included in the article.

In fact, right after some non-disclosure issues with the World my major complaint is not that they parrot one side or the other or have an agenda, it's that in large part outside of reporting on crime and city hall local "reporting" often is simple regurgitation of press releases and then picking one crackpot to quote as the opposing view.

Between all the crime, aliens, taxes, and politics, entertainment articles in the World have seen to of vanished.

I was loaned a scrap book packed full of newspaper clippings from around 1971-1974 of motorsports events held in Oklahoma. Many of those articles are a 1/2 page or 1/4 page in size and have some very interesting information in them.  One is about the rule of no women allowed in the pit area, the U.S. Supreme Court was ruling on that during that season.

Were the articles written because the sport was popular then, or was the sport popular then because the articles were written? Chicken or the Egg question.

Over 14,000 race fans packed into the stadium at the Fairgrounds in OKC and in Tulsa to watch some of the finest drivers in the US competing in some very competitive machines.

Today, the majority of articles in the paper seem to be about other things than Fun and Entertainment.  What happened to cause this?

There was some work being done on 169 Southbound today where they were chucking asphalt over cracks and potholes.  It was great stuff to drive over.  It was like the equivalent of my car chewing on sticky peanut brittle-crunchy and never leaves ya.
