Title: Pearl District Farmer's Market opens today
Post by: Admin on April 05, 2007, 03:48:19 PM
For those of you trapped behind your computer this afternoon and therefore more likely to read this today, LIBERATE yourself sometime between the hours of 4pm and 8pm to come and help the Pearl celebrate the launch of the Pearl Farmers Market - at least nine vendors/farmers today, and more signing up.

Try to make a point of buying all of your fresh produce from either the PEARL FARMERS MARKET, or the market soon to open on Tuesdays in Downtown, or the Wednesday one at 41 St.; or the
Saturday market on Cherry St.

There's really no need to set foot in a major grocery chain (for produce
anyway) when you can meet the farmer who grew it...in Oklahoma

I plan on heading down that way after work with my boy.  Should be interesting to see what a farmers market has to offer this early in the spring.  Baked goods and plants I imagine.  I look forward to actual produce in later in the season.

I went down and there were a few vendors, not too much in the way of produce, still too early unless grown in a hothouse.  Which is not a bad idea.

The more farmers markets we can get started in Tulsa, the better.  That will only help in starting to create a food culture in this town, something beyond biscuits and gravy and chicken fried steak.  Nothing wrong with those things unless that is all you have to brag about.

As for farmers using green houses or hoop houses to get crops out of the ground and producing early,  I am all for it.  At least it is locally grown produce not shipped in from Texas or California.

Is there information about the opening date for the downtown market yet?

I went. Not a lot there yet, but I came home with a bag of just-picked organic spinach, and some hummus and pasta salad from Palace Cafe.

It will get better as the crops come in. I'll be back. (http://members.cox.net/tulsamini/smilies/clapclap.gif)

I went by just to see some farmers. There wasn't an single person wearing overalls in the whole place. No tractors, either.

I bought some mushrooms from some lady who was drinking wine out of a silver or pewter goblet. I think she was part of the market, but she could have just been part of my imagination.

I haven't eaten them yet, but I was kind of afraid of being stopped by the police and questioned.

The farmers may have been jogging on the river trails! No lie, I saw what looked like a farmer in overalls and gardening gloves jogging past Rivers Edge yesterday morning. He wasn't chasing a dog or digging up shrubs either. He had a pony tail though. Talk about eclectic.

Try the 'shrooms on your dog.[:)]

That guy has been running on the trail for some years now.  I have even seen him participate in organized runs like the 'TulsaRun'.  Very interesting sight.

Does this market have a web site yet?  I hope the weather is more cooperative for them this week, like not so cold.
