Australia has begun what it hopes will become a worldwide annual event:
Australia: City goes dark to shed light on global warming concern http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleID=070401_1_A2_spanc54662l
For one hour, all non-essential lights were turned off throughout the city.
quote:
Restaurants throughout the city held candlelit dinners, and families gathered in public places to take part in a countdown to lights out, sending up a cheer as lights started blinking off at 7:30 p.m.
Even if you aren't concerned with global warming, I think this would be a great idea--preferably more than once a year. It would be wonderful to have a night in which we could all go out and actually see the night stars. And I wonder how much the city could save in electrical bills. (I am sure that Patric will point out that more could be saved by changing lightbulbs, but that really isn't a romantic idea, is it?).
If I was there I'd turn ON every light in my house to show support AGAINST this global-warming foolishness. This is getting to be like Alace in Wonderland, common sense goes out the window and loony logic rules when it come to global warming. Before you know it they will be forcing everyone to buy those mercury filled $5.00 light bulbs with the blessing of the light bulb company.Global-warming is just junk science run amuck like P.C has.
The City of Tulsa does its part to fight global warming by turning off street lights on different stretches of highway over time. Not like anyone needs to SEE while driving 60mph and keeping their eyes looking out for sleeping truck drivers and drunk kids.

I would say we have accumulated some sort of "lighting credit...."
As LaFortune had the highway lights turned off most of the time he was in office..........
Who would have thought....?
LaFortuna....
Concerned about global warming.

AMEN!!!
A quote from Hillary Clinton : "I turn off a light and say, 'Take that, Iran,' and "Take that, Venezuela.'"
This quote inspires me to leave my lights on.

You just proved that you're a perfect neo-con -- so eager and happy to waste money in blind pursuit of ideology.
I will confess I'm a conservative, but I also support the freedom to believe in and buy what you want. Have some tolerance for other viewpoints, don't believe in global warming maself, I think it's a hoax and even Al Gore (the global warming god) does NOT do what he preachs, he uses 25 times more power in his homes than an average person and Al Gore's private jet uses 450 gallons of fuel per hour. The "Off-sets" is a joke and Al Gore pays himself with his own global warming company. It's all junk science
One way to sell new products or create new industries is to create a problem.
ADHD- not a common diagnosis when I was in school and wasn't until there was a "treatment" for it, now millions of kids have become consumers of ritalin and other drugs.
E.D.- Probably millions more men take ED drugs than who really need them. How about drinking a little less or losing some weight?
Plenty others out there where a small portion of the population actually has a problem but once a remedy is found which can make someone profit, it gets exploited far beyond the target crowd.
Global Warming- Invest in "green" companies then create panic and hysteria with bogus documentaries to help bolster those investments.
Might be an urban myth but, there was much speculation that Dow Chemical was behind a lot of the early "hole in the ozone layer from refrigerants" data. The patent Dow held on Freon was about to run out. At any rate, it sure created a market for new refrigerants and equipment which could use those refrigerants and reclaim them.
Look, I do what I can, where I can to decrease my usage of energy and to limit the pollution I create. However, I object to mass hysteria and the propagators of it, especially when they are promoting junk science and do have a very vested financial interest in the issue.
Gang, This stuff is all radical enviromentalism. I heard that Belglum passed a BBQ tax of 20 euros for polution of Co2 gases, and if your caught using your grill without paying that tax your in deep doo-doo. They will enforce this law by flying choppers over people's homes, not to mention the fumes the choppers produce flying around all day. Then ya got those silly $5.00 light bulbs that they want to force on the people, each light bulb has Mercury in it so it's a hazzard to start with. The light bulbs are all made in China, so China will have to crank up it's coal fired plants to produce more of those $5.00 light bulbs, that it seems will be forced on the American people. Congress is thinking about banning the incadcent light bulb. I don't believe in global warming but even if it was true is it worth the collapse of the economy and our life style over a (maybe) 1.2 temp rise over 100 years? Besides I myself think a warmer planet is better anyhow. I see no perks of having a colder planet. Darn right I'd turn on every light in my house and make a stand against loonyness. (Rush L. offten talks about how crazy this loony global warming thing has got on his radio show).
There is a lot of emissions created in developing and manufacturing "green" technologies.
The only way to get around "greenhouse" gasses is to cut off all usage of oil and hydrocarbons, and go back to an agrarian economy.
Then there would be some sort of other global hysteria. I'd bet on it.

this is all typical knee-jerk neo-con clap-trap. seriously, do you seriously believe that the feds in belgium fly over in helos to bust people having a bbq?
if that is indeed true, why do you care what belgium does? do you live there? is your way of life threatened by what the belgian govt. mandates?
do you really think that will happen in oklahoma?
this argument is reminiscent of the people that wanted to keep fighting roosters ..but..but..but PETA is going to take away our rodeos!
i personally see nothing wrong with doing your own part, no matter how small, even if its turning off a light in the bathroom down the hall, but apparently some of you do. do you really enjoy paying to leave unused lights on in your house? that is not being conservative, not by a long shot.

That's the story I heard They will fly choppers around to enforce the Co2 tax on BBQ grills in Belglum. Why do I care? Because this radical enviromentalism spreads, today it's Europe, tomorrowm it's my home town of Columbus, Ohio. The slipery slope, they already are talking about exaust fumes on lawn mowers and some lawn mowers have to have emission controls. The slipery slope it won't stop there. I guess you can find stories about that Belglum thing thru google
Talk about the slipery slope, look how far the nutty seat belt laws went in many states, and I don't smoke but look how far smoking bans have come- At first they had smoking and non-smoking sections on airline flights, then they made all flights under 4 hours non-smoking then they banned all smoking in aircraft, now it's restaurants and bars, in Columbus, Ohio they want a city wide smoking ban. I don't smoke but that stuff scares me, that's too much gov't control over our lives. Now they start with this global-warming hoax, many scientists do not believe in it, but they are ignored. Al Gore's movie is a work of fiction but is taken as gospel. This is dangerous stuff gang, many people are buying into the global-warming brainwashing. Co2 is a non-toxic gas that we breath out, what's next a tax on our nose or will we be forced to wear a mask? Co2 is mostly water and they want to call it a dangerous gas.

And then there is the liberal battle cry: "Well, they are doing it in Europe, they are doing it in Canada..."
What works in Europe doesn't always translate to success here in the U.S. And just because they do things in Europe, it doesn't mean it always works well, i.e. socialized health care.
