New troubles for a local author. William Bernhardt has been arrested for drunk driving for the second time in a month. This most recent arrest happened in Jenks on Sunday around 2:00 p.m. The police report says the original call went out as a hit and run. A woman saw someone hit a mailbox and drive off. News On 6 crime reporter Lori Fullbright reports the woman got the tag number of the Land Rover and called police.
The report says the officer spotted Bernhardt driving at 114th and Elm. It says he didn't stop when the officer turned on his lights, but nearly hit a motorcycle rider and ran a red light before pulling into a driveway and hitting a guardrail. The officer said he smelled a strong odor of alcohol and Bernhardt admitted, when asked, that he'd been drinking. It says he had heavily slurred speech and almost fell when he got out of the vehicle. He was too unsteady on his feet for sobriety tests, so he was given a breathalyzer. The report says he blew a .24, which is three times the legal limt.
Bernhardt was arrested in Tulsa for a DUI on February 23rd. That time, officers say he refused to follow their commands to get out of the car. A few days later, Berhnhardt apologized on the News On 6.
"I apologize to my family, my friends, my fans," he said.
Bernhardt has written a string of novels based on crime and courts that often feature local people and landmarks. We left a message at Bernhardt's home and publishing company, but didn't hear back.

I wonder if he had his shoes on the right feet this time? [}:)]
Rough month for this guy apparently.
I guess we can go from "he just made a mistake" to "this guy's an idiot."
How 'bout we take his license away fro a bit so we can at least try him for the first two dui's before he gets arrested for another one or kills someone.
Maybe he was running out of material for his next book and needed to have a true story to tell...

That might hurt his feelings[:(]
Sounds like it's time for this guy to check in somewhere..
I know the woman who reported the incident. She is stating that the local constabulary is treating this as a misdemeanor rather than a felony. Could this be possible? Could his notoriety be buying him a mulligan? I've never really cared for his writing and the crowd at the book signing gig at Steve's was underwhelming to say the least.

It will be a felony before it is all said and done. He has to be tried on the original DUI first and then once that is done it will make his second one an automatic felony charge.
guy is completely wasted in the afternoons.
im in the wrong line of work.
seriously, sounds like this guy needs his license taken away and he needs to get into rehab, immediately.
"...nearly hit a motorcycle rider...".
Hang him!
he's at it again

For the love of god -- please get this man into rehab.
They tried to make me go to rehab I said no, no, no.....
****-faced in the morning at an elementary school... wonder if he's "hit bottom" yet?
Maybe it's just bad timing....
Unless I'm a total tard (which is entirely possible) this is his third arrest in less than a year for DUI. (Jan., March and now.)
Please get some help. Some of us have been there, done that - help is available. Your life is falling apart - fast.

2 DUI's and one public intoxication, I think.
JAIL!!!!
He should get some great material hanging out in prison.
Alchohol is the scurge of our society when it comes to drugs.....right after crack, meth and ice which are one in the same....
I had a bit of that scourge of our society after harvesting honey from our beehive yesterday. A Tecate and a Shiner Bock. Yum.
You should make your own mead.
I made 5 gallons of mead from Oklahoma honey (BixBee Honey) a couple years back. Holy wow, that was some strong and sweet stuff. I ended up force carbonating it to help temper its taste and because, well, I wanted to.
A friend that likes mead enjoyed the heck out of it, chicks seemed to like it to... way to sweat for me. I don't think I finished a full glass and most people shared my sentiment that mead is not for most people.
I had mead about eight years ago. Had just one regular glass, and had a nasty headache the next day. Too sweet for me.
And a third and fourth time...

QuoteLINCOLN, Nebraska - An Oklahoma author has been arrested again for driving drunk. Records say William Bernhardt was picked up by Lincoln, Nebraska police after he slammed into the back of a parked truck.
Police say Bernhardt was lost when he drove onto Burlington Northern railroad property at about 8 p.m. December 7, 2011. He ran into the back of truck where a railroad employee was sitting waiting for a train car to arrive.
Arrest documents say he initially refused a breathalyzer, and then later blew a .247, three times the legal blood alcohol content limit.
Nebraska police say Bernhard was charged with felony DUI since he has two previous DUIs on his record. That doesn't include the DUI arrest he had in Oklahoma County on May 26, 2011.
He was also charged that day with running from police and having an open container. He's due back in court for those charges on January 19th.
Bernhardt is the author of a series of legal thrillers, many set in Oklahoma.
Great writer. Slow learner.

It's called addiction. It's really too bad that forcing drunks to go to AA or whatever is no more effective than not. A person really has to want to beat it. At least with smoking there are drugs like Chantix/Wellbutrin and maintenance products that make it easier to take that first step and follow through. The real problem is that it often has to involve changing your friends, and that very lack of a support structure makes it much harder to keep off the sauce.
Yet another reason I think public transportation is much more important than its funding would indicate. ;)

That's the key. Until he's truly ready, no amount of pressure from others will get him to change or quit. To Bernhardt, anyhow, he's not hit bottom yet, at least he hadn't before now.

That goes for things such as smoking as well, despite the availability of the drugs to combat the cravings.
