Title: TulsaNow Requests Ideas for Topics/Speakers
Post by: PonderInc on March 16, 2007, 03:34:49 PM
Each year, TulsaNow organizes public forums (the "show up in person" kind of public forum, not to be confused with the "online" kind of public forum) to address topics pertinent to our mission. Last year's forums included the Mayoral Candidate Forum and "Building the Beautiful Back into Tulsa" which introduced us to architect, Alan Hart, and how zoning and form-based codes can be used as a recipe to help build the city we desire.

What topics would you like to see addressed this year? If you have ideas about great topics and/or speakers, please let us know.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation will be holding their convention in Tulsa. I'll bet this would be a good opportunity to get some speakers.

A topic that can't be discussed enough is the Comprehensive Plan update.

Oh, alright alright, due to the mounting groundswell of support and bags of pleading mail from my adoring fans.... I will put together an exploratory committee to decide if I should speak.[:P]

I would like to see two events....

Tulsa Now do research as to which Developers have paved the way in other Urban Areas regarding "Form Based Code coupled with Green Building" and made Huge Profit$..

Bring Them Here...!!

To shine a light on development and "Bridge the Gap" between Builders, Developers, and the Tulsa Now set..."

Second Wish... Hah...like this is going to happen....

Invite the CEO of the Metro Chamber to give us a summation on what his Club has done lately to deserve even half the money they get from the City.

Fred Kent, President, Project for Public Spaces (bio (//%22http://www.pps.org/info/aboutpps/staff/fkent%22))

From their website: "PPS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining public spaces that build communities." They specifically focus on parks, public plazas, streetscapes, transportation, civic centers, and public markets. Bringing Fred in here would be a major-league get. Better book a huge room if you get him.

In going through some of my favorite sites I came across this.....

Although it is in regards to another Downtown it gives quite a bit of insight as to what others think, look for, and strive to achieve in creating an "Urban Core" Downtown.

Having a speaker on this would help....

Something, in this direction, would give some fresh insight to what is seeming to stall in the momentum Tulsa needs to have...
That is if we are going to continue down the path to revitalizing Downtown......

Lively Downtown....! (//%22http://www.mlive.com/aanews/video/flash/index.ssf?20061001_livelydowntown%22)

I met Glen Hiemstra and Ed Hudnut at a dog and pony show called, the "Vision Summit" and immediately felt a new era ushered in.
I was wrong as it proved a bait and switch, and thus have pestered both, for years now, to return and take lafortune/ us to task.

Glen has expressed repeated interest.

But backing up, I suggest a format:

I.Drag in a noteable Historian to tell us what we had.
II. Next up is some org. (wink wink nudge) that can define what we got now.
III. Then turn the stage over to one of these  individuals that can tell us where to go and a bit about how we might get there.

The need for outside imput, or new blood, is not limited to corporations. We sit around and talk to eachother all the time, how about bringing one or both of these guys back for a second round and hear something from outside of our box?

Sincerely,
jdb
