Title: Tulsa Rowing
Post by: cannon_fodder on March 14, 2007, 09:03:43 AM
Midtown lost another part of its charm this year - Tulsa Rowing has moved to a new facility on the Verdigris north of Catoosa.

Basically, the city-county never got together with the Corps to regulate water levels in the midtown area to make it sufficient to even have a row boat on the river.  They had issues with low flows, high flows, sand bars and all sorts of other issues.

I'm not what you would call a rowing fan.  But I have enjoyed several rowing meets on the river with my family and love seeing the boats out there practicing in the mist as I drive downtown every day.  There are few things as relaxing as the site of a row boat on the river - with Tulsa's skyline in the distance.

Oh well, another small part of Tulsa's culture moving to the suburbs.

Thats a shame. Hopefully there will still be a vote this year on some sort of funding for river improvements. Perhaps a boathouse can be part of that plan and funding.

The Tulsa junior rowers (a great group of kids) have taken over the rowing building on the west side of the river and practice regularly on the river. so we will still see rowers.

That's good, because you can't watch a Chamber ad without seeing a rowing crew out on the Arkansas.
