Title: Is myspace evil?
Post by: sgrizzle on January 04, 2007, 01:01:45 PM
I keep seeing news stories and reading articles about how myspace is apparently to blame for internet predators, identity theft and the downfall of humanity as a whole. After reading a few "christian opinions" on myspace, I found myself wanting the slap my monitor upside the CRT.

Is paper evil because they print playboy on it?

Are minivans evil because people kidnap kids with them?

Is the TV evil because you can hook an xbox to it?

I'm not just talking religious perspective, I'm talking overall american attitudes. Is this just more scapegoat-seeking behavior or is the internet really out to get me?

I think by and large the media likes to create a sensation.  It's boring to blame internet predators....they're the boogeyman that is hard to see, but MySpace is something everyone knows, can see, can even be a part of.  I think it's up to parents to monitor their kids.  IF not myspace, they can meet a predator on ANY number of other sites.

If you're on myspace and past the age of 17 you're a total loser. That is all.

There are all kinds of reasons for someone over 17 to have a MySpace.

First - its original purpose was to allows bands a place to showcase their talent, and it is still en affective tool for this purpose.

Second, other entertainers now use it to promote their various shows as well.

As far as the "dangers" are concerned, there are none.  Now the way that individuals behave on there is a different story.  Parental supervision is the best way to take care of this problem.  Problem is, too many parents treat the iternet as if it's somekind of babysitter and they leave their kids unattended.

I use it to stay connected to friends all over. Not sure how that would be considered evil.

Well, i must be a loser, along with 90 million other people.  [:D]

I use it to stay connected with people, find people I haven't seen in years, etc.  I look at it as being like an advanced email system.

myspace is just a place for friends to communicate and have fun! doesn't matter how old you are! it's other people that abuse it that make it look bad!

echo...echo...echo...

The name "echo" comes from the Greek nymph Ç÷þ from Greek mythology. According to Greek mythology Echo was an Oread who had the job of talking incessantly to Hera, the Queen of the Gods, so that her husband, Zeus, wouldn't get caught in his numerous affairs. Hera caught on to Echo's trick and cursed her to only be able to say what others had just said -- hence the word "echo".

I finally found a job my ex-wife was qualified for. She even talked in her sleep.

An old friend from overseas tracked me down last week and talked me into setting up a facebook page to keep in touch.  I thought that's what email's for if you are too cheap to call overseas or too lazy to get a good calling card.  I felt, so, so, uh, juvenile.  I'm just waiting for the dirty old men to start chatting me up.  You can find me under my real name of Conan70.

Heh.  I was watching "2 1/2 Men" last night.  Steven Tyler had moved in next door to Charlie.  After they had gotten in a scuffle, Jon Cryer says to Tyler as he's walking out the door: "I lost my virginity to you."  Tyler replied along the lines of "Yeah, there's lots about the '70's I can't remember."
