Title: Mayo Hotel sign
Post by: perspicuity85 on January 03, 2007, 06:38:27 PM
I know the Mayo Hotel is being renovated into lofts, but what about the neon sign on top of the building?  Are there any plans to restore the "MAYO" sign?  The west elevation view of the skyline would look really cool if the Mayo sign was lit up to its former brilliance.

if the could refurbish it in an energy efficient manner.  those bulbs would be too expensive to operate these days.

Perhaps the Urban Light Crusader Patric could help us out here.

Neon is pretty efficient and would last longer and look better than incandescent or HID (i.e., Metal Halide or Sodium). LED's have also been used to simulate the neon look and use even less  power. Incandescent is cost-prohibitive in terms of energy requirements and maintenance.

In moderation, it could be a fine addition to the streetscape.  It's historical significance alone would make this a worthwhile project.
