Title: Half-staff
Post by: patric on December 29, 2006, 12:11:54 AM
Driving around town today it was interesting to see the difference between people who fly their flags with respect and meaning, and those who just use them for advertising or lawn ornaments.

Really, how hard would it be to take a more responsible role in flag display by just spending a few minutes to make an adjustment signifying the flag has more meaning than a bird bath or a porcelain gnome?

Gov. Henry orders flags to be flown at half-staff

" The U.S. Flag Code prescribes flags at half-staff for 30 days after a president or former president dies. A sitting vice president, current and former chief justices, and the speaker of the House receive 10 days at half-staff upon their deaths. Former vice presidents, associate justices of the Supreme Court, Cabinet members, military chiefs and governors all are honored with half-staff treatment until burial. Members of Congress are honored with half-staff flags on the day of their death and the next day.
The president can order flags flown at half-staff upon the death of major U.S. government figures or foreign dignitaries. "

My flag is permanently attached by bolts to a long pole. In cases such as mine I read  that in order to show respect you are supposed to attach a small black flag at the top of the flag that is flying.

I should probably just take it down.

[:(]I just think that people are so busy with working and running around and all wrapped up in everyday life that they forget to lower their flags in respect. Although after listening to some people around more people today just dont seem to care.

Keep in mind that flags flown 24 hours should also be lit when the sun goes down.

And I don't consider myself a shut-in or anything but I didn't know Ford had died until about an hour ago. Saddam is (sadly) trumping him on the news.

[^]But at least now you know and I'm sure you have lowered your flag.
