Title: Looking for a good steak
Post by: Goodpasture on December 24, 2006, 02:34:11 PM
Tried the Spudder, Jamil's, Avalon, Freddie's in Sapulpa, Freddie's in Drumright. Tried most of that stuff along 71st.

Most of them serves white bread (and not really good white bread, just white tasteless crap) with margarine. Who the he** uses margarine at a $40 a plate meal? Most of the restaurant row places have better sides, but you have to put up with mediocre service and way too loud "ambiance."

Is there any place out there that uses real butter, good bread, a baked potato with real sour cream and NO textured soy protein bacon flavored crunchies along with a decent 14-18 oz steak?

And what is with the bagged iceberg lettuce? Do they really think that we can't tell the difference between a good home made salad dressing and something that comes from a Kraft wannabe?

Then the wine...... I suppose it makes sense to serve something out of a box as a house wine if you don't sell a lot of it. But the Avalon sold me a carafe of something where 2:00 was a good hour for $20.00 and it almost filled two glasses half way. Needless to say, that place is off my list forever....whipped margarine on their fresh bread (reheated from the Sysco bakery I presume) with over priced bilge water/wine....decent steak though. Too bad the rest is crap.

Is there a good steak house in Tulsa that has it all?

I'm voting mcgills on 21st or flemings (the creamed spinach is amazing)

McGill's (the one on E. 21st Street. Not the one on 61st.) is a good choice. I've heard good things about Flemmings but have never been there.  However, if I was going to spend the money and wanted the best I would go to Mahogany Prime Steakhouse, 6823 S. Yale Avenue Tulsa, OK 74136, (918) (918) 494-4043.  I believe it is the best steak house around Tulsa.  Their wine/bar selection is also impressive.

Here is their website:

We went to Kal's Southern Hills Chop House recently and it was the best and I mean THE BEST steak I have ever eaten in my life. Seriously good.

It was expensive (to us), but we had been given a gift certificate that covered it. Two steak dinners, a basket of fresh bread that they make there, a glass of wine for me, two beers for him and a shared dessert was right around $75.

The service was impeccable and Kal himself made it a point to check on every table at least twice.

Two thumbs up! http://www.kalschophouse.com/index.html

Haven't found that perfect Angus Aged Beef steak with a fresh baked potato with the real butter, cream cheese, sour cream deal, other than at my house.

For the holidays I cook an entire beef tenderloin I pick up at Perry's Meat Market on Lewis.  Make a valley of the coals at medium heat and flip it over 1/4 turn at a time.

I always serve a multi veggie tossed green salad along with some of my famous brown sugar/onion baked beans cooked on the Grant Hastings designed Hasty Bake using lump hickory and a few pieces of fruit tree wood for the smoke flavor.

Potatoes I found a great way to make them.  Use red new potatoes, boil them in a casserole dish using salt and a bay leaf.  When fork done, drain off 1/4 cup of the potato water.  Drain the rest, let the potatoes dry while preparing the topping.  Made from 1/2 lb of Cream Cheese a  1/2 stick of melted butter, salt pepper and your favorite like chives, onions etc.  Mix well.  Smash the Potatoes, not whip or mash.  Just simply Smash them in the casserole dish. Pour the mixture over the top, server and enjoy.

Got one on the grill as I type.

Happy Hoidays.

A couple tidbits of information for you city folks out there:

-- That Angus Beef stuff is just sly marketing by Angus cattle breeders. Angus is no better or worse than any other breed of beef cattle. If you have a choice, prime or fancy steak, it's all good, no matter if it's from  an Angus, Charlois, Simmental, Shorthorn, etc.

-- If you have a steak or any other meat on the grill, you should flip it just once. If you keep turning it, you'll dry it out to where it's tough as leather.

-- I'll agree with AMP that Perry's is one fine place to buy meat.

I've always have good results at Perry's. Lately, I have been going to Bruner's Meat market at 81st and Sheridan.  It's closer to my house and I've had good experiences so far.

And for the record, Prime steak is the only way to go if you got the extra money.

While I agree that Flemmings is good, you could buy an entire cow for what it costs to eat there.  I never could see spending so much money on a steak.  Anyone can cook a decent steak, if you splurge for good meat.  Why spend another $20 just so someone else can cook it?  Perry's is a good place to get steak, as is the meat-nazi, Mr. Hanover on 41st.  But don't ask him any questions, or go in too late on Saturday.

Thank you for the info.  I will take my wife there as soon as I can.  I will gladly pay the price for a good steak.

Molly's Landing is a nice place.  Interesting atmosphere and median prices.

Up north of Catoosa on the highway near the Kerr McGee Channel.

McGill's is my favorite place for steak. I like the Green Onion on 51st as well.

I've heard good things about Mahogany but haven't been there. On the pricier side, the Polo Grill in Utica Square does everything well, including steaks. On the inexpensive side, you can get a pretty darn decent sirloin, KC strip or T-bone at Brothers Houligan. I want to say you can pay as little as $13.95 for a tavern steak dinner, depending on the cut.

Ah, forgot about the Green Onion. They do make a scrumptious steak, charred on the outside and medium rare on the inside with lots of juice.

They make a wonderful Sherry Tomato Soup as well. And some Giant Pennington's style Fried Shrimp that are butterfly cut and smashed to make em big and crunchy.

WhatI would give for an original slice of Pennington's Black Bottom Pie.

Believe I had a Rib Eye last time there, a radio station sales rep bought me dinner over a buy for one of our special events.  Think that steak cost me around $3,500.  LOL

Blackend prime rib, medium rare at the Green Onion. No contest.

For something out of the way...   Hickory Hills..
131st and 129th.

I used to be able to get a 6 oz bacon wrapped fillet, vegetable, potato, soup and salad plus a couple of beers for about $20.

Speaking of, I need to go back there.

I have never had a bad steak at the Celebrity Restaurant (formerly the Celebrity Club) at 31st & Yale.  And their Caesar salads, freshly prepared and served tableside, are wonderful too, in both taste and presentation.  The restaurant/club has been there for 40+ years, so they must be doing something right.

Yes, Mike and Nicky Samara have always served up the primo groceries at the Celebrity Club.  Lunch there is reasonable and they have great Fried Shrimp.

The table prepared Ceasar rocks. Best in Tulsa!

Back in the 1960s, on the rare occasions that my parents would go out to eat without us kids, we always knew where they were going by my parent's mode of dress.  When mom was in one of her beaded, sparkly cocktail dresses with high heals, and dad was in a suit & tie, we knew they were going to either the Petroleum Club or the Celebrity Club!  That was back in the days when people used to dress for dinner, especially for restaurant dining.
Celebrity is no longer a private club, but the steaks and salads are still top notch.  You are right, their Caesar salad rocks.  For a light meal, you can go there just for the Caesar salad alone.

I don't eat out at fancy restaurants much because I don't make a lot of money and my kids can embarass me at a fancy place in a minute. I swear the cloth napkins and fancy water glasses turn both my kids into Jerry Lewis clones.

But my parents said they would take my wife to any place she wanted for her birthday and she said Mahogany. My wife and I got some good clothes on, left the young-uns with her mom, and met them for an early dinner.

When I ordered my steak, I asked what comes with it. I was expecting maybe some tator tots or fried okra, but was shocked when the waiter said "nothing". They had other stuff, but would charge me more.

The next weird thing to me was when they showed up with our four steaks, four guys with little flashlights shined on our plates and waited for us to cut into them to make sure they were done enough. It was kind of an odd experience having a spotlight on my meal, then having somebody waiting for me to show my expertise at cutlery.

If I ever go back, I will probably pull out a switchblade just to shock them or maybe pick up the meat with my hands and take a bite out of the side.

I have never been to Mahogany, but have heard that it was good steaks for mucho big $.  After your review, I think I will pass.  Seems like too much pretention for me.  You can get quality steaks at Jamils or Celebrity without the pretention and attitude.

I'll have to second the Petroleum Club but it's still private so it doesn't really count here.  When we moved back to Tulsa about 2003 we had a couple of dissapointing meals there, not bad at all but not what I'd remembered.  However over the last year of so things have taken off and the food has gotten really good.  It's hard to beat the view from the upstairs bar as well.  One of my favorite things there is the seafood Fridays...my brothers and I would eat boiled shrimp and crab claws till we could hardly move and THEN we'd actually eat dinner.

Bros Houligan definately has some quality steaks, I always get the T-bone.  However, since their new place opened at 61st and Mingo I think the service on 15th has declined since they likely moved some of the experienced staff to the new store.

I know grilling your own steak is not the same as a primo steak at a restaurant, but can anyone recommend a good local meat market for prime steaks?  Years ago, I used to buy meat at Perrys market on north Lewis, I think.  Haven't been there in years.  Reasors sells prime grade beef in their butcher counter sections.  For those of us that want to save a buck, what are the best local beef sellers?

St. Michael's Alley is kind of a hole-in-the-wall place at 31st and Harvard.  They have my favorite steak at any restaurant in Tulsa: the "charbroiled marinated club steak."  It's marinated overnight in sherry, soy sauce, and pineapple juice.  The restaurant has a sort of Irish pub theme- which makes it a great place to go on St. Patrick's Day.

i thought Kals was ho hum, though I did like the mafia don hangout atmosphere.  The best steak goes to Mahogany's, but you are going to pay for it.  Also, Kal's wine selection is lacking.  I asked for a syrah (of ANY kind) and they only had ONE (1).  Thats kinda lame.

I did that. Never again. Will go to Freddies in Sapulpa before I go back to the Avalon.

Tried the Silver Flame the other night. Four of us spent nearly $200 and we still had to put up with mediocre bread with whipped margarine. these guys can't afford to go to Aldi's and get some $2.00 a pound butter? Their ovens are so full of potatos they can't serve some fresh bread? I KNOW Sysco has brown and serve loaves that are inexpensive, and if breadsticks are so tough, how come they are offered at Olive Garden?

Wow, the Avalon when it was a Speak Easy type place hidden at the edge of the Industrial Park servered some of the best toppings for their Baked Potatoes.

Story goes, when liquor was illegal in Tulsa County, the small window door on the front door played the part of having the password to gain entrance.

I recall a lazy susan type server for the Potato Toppings, it contained Cream Cheese with Chives, Butter, Sour Cream and Bacon Bits plus perhaps some other topping.

Always ordered their Chateaubriand, which was marvelous.

Have not tried the new location.

Speaking of Real Butter, we used to carry a tub of real butter to the "All You Can Eat Crab Leg Buffets" around town.  Seems there was one at 31st by the I-169 Exit at one time.  And the Silver Fork at Admiral and Memorial had Crab Legs. It is now Panchos.

The kitchen would always melt the butter for us, and server up fresh sliced lemmons for dipping the crab legs.

Who has those All You Can Eat Crab Leg Deals today?

I was in Las Vegas right before Christmas and went to the Friday night seafood buffet at the Stratosphere.

The crab legs were the size of children, or a small woman.

Back to the steak question, I went to Senor Tequlia's on Brookside on New Years Eve and ordered their T-bone steak covered with peppers and onions. It was surprisingly good and was only ten dollars.

My best yet. The Chalkboard Restaurant (http://www.thechalkboard-tulsa.com/) in the Ambassador Hotel, downtown Tulsa. The grilled center cut fillet with bearnaise sauce was impeccable. The wine list was very full of good suprises as well.

I have yet to try many of the previous recommendations, but they'll have a pretty high bar to get over. We'll see...

My dad introduced me to Bruner's Meat Market @ 81st and Sheridan.

I'd like to un-thank him!

For a twist we tried their stuffed chicken, ugh.. do NOT get it, very very bland.  So was their stuffed pork if I recall.  We just stick to NY, T-Bone lately.... moved away from Pork.
