I'll be in Tulsa over the holidays for my annual visit. With 10 days to fill, I am curious of anyone's opinions of best new restaurants / pubs / diners / bars to open in the past year. I tend to spend most of my time north of I-44 when home, but I might venture south if it's worth the visit.
Aside from my usuals (which include Cancun, Full Moon, Bros Houligan, McNellie's, Kilkenny's, and Coney Island among others), what do you guys recommend that has opened recently?
I would reccomend the Brook 34th & Peoria... they have been open for a few years, but they seem to fit your tastes they have great fried mushrooms!
A hole in the wall is Los Girasoles in BA off 71st (407 E Kenosha St) Cash only, but they have a huge supreme burrito; steak rice, onions, lettuce... all covered in cheese for 6.50 [}:)]
Like Pizza? www.savastanospizzeria.com they have been around for a while and are pricey, but a great Chicago Style Pizza.
Just curious, but how many coneys can you eat? my record is 15, but I think I could do more
Two words.....Phat Phillies. It has incredible philly cheesesteaks and is located downtown.

You gotta be kidding me on Savastano's. I finally got a deep dish pizza thinking "man, this will be good"! When lo and behold it was the lousiest pizza. It was a large pile of dough with a thin layer of toppings on top. The dough tasted crappy and was nowhere near any type of deep dish I have ever had. There is no way that is authentic or pizza would have been out centuries ago.
The layer of crust under the toppings was still WAY doughy and wasn't even cooked. I definitely wouldn't recommend that place. (fuming)

Tomatoes are a new world food. Centuries ago (and less) pizza was made with other kinds of fruit. FYI
The worst pizza I ever had was in Paris. Was sooo starving. Tried ordering from a menue at a local restaurant. Found Pizza on it so ordered that. When my "Pizza" came out it was the size of a large tortilla, and just as thin. Had about a pack of ketchups worth of tomato sauce on it and on top of that an egg, sunny side up. Wasnt exactly sure how to eat the thing. Tried slicing it into quarters to pick up and eat, but it was so thin and slimy it wouldnt really cut. After several various, and quite creative, attempts at figuring out how to eat the thing and noticing the natives giving me strange looks I just rolled the thing up like a burrito and ate it that way lol.
The closest thing I found to pizza was calzone at another nearby place. I thought I was ordering 3 pieces to go but ended up with 3 boxes, each with a huge calzone in it. Oh well I like pizza anyway. Got to the room, simply famished. Sat on my bed and started chowing down. Had a good mouth full, swallowed half the mouth full, only to discover that French cheese is quite durable. I started choking, with half the bite stuck in my throat and the other half still in my mouth and both halves attached by an extremely tough strand of cheese. I couldnt cough it up, couldnt swallow, couldnt breathe, was all alone in the room choking and drooling. Finnaly had to stuff my hand into the back of my mouth and grab the one part of the calzone and pull. This freed the other part to go down. I laid on the bed gasping for breath with a hand full of calzone and drool imagining the headline.... In the news today, An American tourist is found dead in his hotel room after choking to death during an apparent calzone feeding frenzy.[:P]
After a couple weeks of "Williams adventures with French food" all I could say was... Praaaaaise the Lawd! when I found that Mc Donalds.[:D]
Thank you two for your suggestions. I'll definitely have to do Phat Phillies. Love a good cheesesteak!
In answer to Unknown's question, I have never challenged myself on coneys .... only on hot dogs (I think I did 17 at a Drillers game once). I'm sure the chili on a coney would limit that number, but maybe I'll have to try this time when in town.
Savastano's is okay, but if you are going there thinking it is going to be Chicago style, you will probably be disappointed. The thin crust is definitely not Chicago style and the deep dish, although it looks Chicago, it just isn't.
That's the only weakness I see with Savastano's -- the crust is dull. Everything else about it is pretty good, though.
If you are willing to spend a small fortune, the new restaurant, The Brasserie, on Brookside is excellent, IMO. We went there for a special occasion last week, and I was very impressed. The french onion soup was delicious (not too salty), and the duck was incredible. My only complaint--the coffee was mediocre at best. If you go, plan on spending quite a bit, but it will be worth it.
best new restaurant...Pei Weis on 71st.
as far as Savastanos....you can hate on it all you want, but you won't find a deep dish better anywhere in Tulsa. I suspect the haters are just cheapasses who don't buy enough toppings. [}:)]
I thought Pee Wee was on 61st.
On another note, did Bros Houligan move to 61st and Mingo, or are they just expanding?

or we just know what real Chicago pizza is and we get annoyed by bad imitations
I think I am gonna try this one.

Is it an imitation because it's made in Tulsa? I thought the Savastano's were from Chicago and have every reason to be "authentic."
(never been to Chicago)
Saying it's authentic is a joke. I know what pizza was given to me and it wasn't a lack of toppings. If that's all you can pull out to excuse that restaurant then try again.

It is on 61st.....And Houligans expanded....
I love Savastano's. I think the deep dish pizza is great. However, we ususally get the thin crust because the deep dish is so rich.

dolts... all of you. A carbon copy location of an restaurant already established in town (chain or not) doesn't exactly qualify as "new".

uh yes it does. as much as you burn in pain thinking otherwise, the Pei Wei i mentioned is a new restaurant and the subject of this thread is best new restuarant of 2006.
New location, yes. New-to-Tulsa restaurant, no. It's been a dining option in Tulsa for a few years. I've visited the Yale location a few times over the last few years. Something tells my my menu options, service, or dining experience isn't going to be any different at the 2nd location. It's brought nothing new to Tulsa. Do you get excited when a "new" starbucks opens across the street from an existing one because it's "new"? Err, I guess you do.

It's a new restaurant....live with it. Because of this new restuarant I no longer have to trek to 61st/Yale.
And when a new Starbucks opens up in Woodland hills it will be a big deal, because I will not have to go out of my way to get coffee, I can get it while I'm at the mall. The 111th/Memorial Starbucks opening up will be an equally big deal.
What WASN'T a new restaurant? Ming's, when they MOVED from 21st/Yale to 71st/Memorial (now closed and reoped as hong kong buffet). So if Pei Wei's would have closed their 61st/Yale location and moved to 71st that would NOT be a new restaurant.
Its ok, you'll get it through your thick skull some day.[}:)]

pancakes?
ANYWAY ....
Thanks to those of you who made recommendations. I may forego Pei Wei for the moment, as we have one here in Charlotte. The Brasserie on Brookside sounds charming .... I love a good french onion soup. And I may have to check-out Savastanos just to see which side of this debate I fall. Thanks again!

Yes they are from the Chicago area. They are from the south 'burbs as am I. Frank, the owner, was inspired by Giordano's (several Chicagoland locations) and Sanfratello's. (only a few locations in the southside/NW Indiana) I prefer the Sanfratello's style of pizza which has a thicker crust and less cheese. Giordano's on the other hand has a thin crust with loads of cheese and toppings. Unfortunately, the Savastano's went more with the Giordano's style.
I still like Savastano's, but I just don't think it is really worth driving all the way to 111th and Memorial.
