I'm not sure your definition of "good". We always eat at Talley's (11th/Yale) on Christmas Eve night. It's diner food, but
good diner food.

Last year I ended up looking for a place to eat. It was sorta last minute. Of the places I called nearby, Johnny Carino's was open (but closed early). We ended up at Mazzio's.
My advice: where would you like to eat? Call those places and see if they'll be open.

Well, the best place is my house or my mother's [;)]
I think most restaurants are open on Xmas eve with earlier closing hours. My wife and I took my older daughter to McGill's on 21st St. for coffee and dessert either Xmas eve or Xmas night last year- I just can't remember which.
Other than that, I believe most of the large hotels (i.e. Doubletree, Renaissance, Radisson) have buffets on Xmas day. Some places like Village Inn, IHOP, Denny's, or Waffle House are likely open.
Jamil's Thick Juicy Hickory Grilled Steaks is always open on holicays.
On 51st street between Lewis and Harvard.
I had this issue on Thanksgiving night, as my family Thanksgiving dinners were coordinated for other days. I had a hard time finding a place open after 8:00, luckily India Palace was alive and bussling! Maybe thats a good sign for Christmas?
Steak N' Ale and Fridays will be open, but I'm with jne... India Palace would be the best bet
