Title: Best Sledding?
Post by: pmcalk on December 03, 2006, 03:17:44 PM
We usually go to Harwelden--its a great hill, but has become very popular.  Often, the snow is gone within hours, though kids continue to sled on the mud.  I have thought of driving out to McClure, though I think the hills would be difficult to walk up.  Zink park is ok, and I have heard that Rogers HS is great.  When I was little, people would put haystacks at the bottom of Woodward Park, and sled down to Peoria.  Guess that was a little risky.

Where do you go to sled?

One of my daughter's went over to the hill at ORU Friday and Saturday and had a blast.  There's also a retention "pond" at 111th & Yale my other daughter went to w/ friends.  Great slope, but there's usually water in the ditch down at the bottom, it really tests your braking skills...[;)]

I saw the remains of quite a few people that took your "advice".

Doh! Actually, while the Creek was being extended eastward, I used one of the offramp slopes to sled.  That was before it was open to traffic.

My favorite "little-known run" used to be from the Cincinnati bridge embankment down to the old Luby's at 15th and Boston.  This perfect sledding spot was ruined by the "up with trees" people who peppered the run with saplings...and turned it into a slalom course.

When I was in high school my friends and I always went to Chandler for sledding.  You could really get up a head of steam down that front hill but it required some hard braking at the bottom too.
