Title: Metro Diner
Post by: Conan71 on September 22, 2006, 07:20:57 AM
I know this has been discussed on another thread, but does anyone know when the Metro is going to close?

My wife and I were going to stop in for dinner after leaving Arnie's the other night and they were closed just before 9pm.  She said she saw a sign on the door that said they are only open for breakfast & lunch- like 7am to 3pm [:(]

I'm going to miss having that so close to home.

Metro Diner changed their hours of operation on September 15th.  They will fully close at the end of September.

My daughter and some friends had lunch there yesterday. She said the people working were very friendly and food was good. It's a shame that TU has to swallow up everybody and everything in their quest for more landscape and apartments. Their parking still sucks, so I have no idea why they need more land.

I want to eat there one more time before they close, maybe I can talk the missus into breakfast tomorrow or Sunday.  I will miss that as a part of the 11th St. landscape.  What about the Wendy's and when are they going to tear down J.R.'s?

Silly Suckle,

Everyone knows that large grassy area's, with some flags flapping around, are the surest sign of the highest education.

Closing day is uncertain, but the owner says "soon."

I'm sad to see it go since it was sort of a cornerstone in my "coming of age".  It became a favorite haunt of me and my friends- great place for a late night snack after going to J.R.'s, or staggering in the next day for a great hang-over breakfast.  As I matured and bought a house in the neighborhood, I remember my older daughter eating pancakes with her bare hands.  Since moving back to the area I've tried to frequent it with some regularity.  Just wondering where I'll have to go to get a Monte Cristo fix now.

I notice in the link you provided, it's not considered "historic" since it was built in the 1980's, understandable by anyone's definition.

In a way, it will always be historic in my life.  One of those places 25 years down the road I'll be saying: "Remember the old Metro Diner?"

It's dissapointing to read in the article you linked to that he hasn't found a new location and may not reopen at all.  It seems like there would be a number of suitable sites fairly close by along 11th.

If he is wanting to take this opportunity to get out of the business then it would sure be nice if some local restuaranteur would step in, buy the operation and re-establish it as close by as possible, with as close to the look of the original as possible.

Auctioning off the contents doesn't sound too promising.  They ought to find a site in the Brady or Blue Dome to re-open it.

A friend told me today that he had lunch at The Metro over the weekend. He was told that they would be open through December.

Interesting. The must have got a bit of a reprieve. When I was there several weeks back, they told me they were shutting down at the end of this week.

Although it's not an authentic '50s diner, the thing I've always loved the most about this place is the neon. I had to snap some pics for this Lost Tulsa entry (//%22http://www.losttulsa.com/2006/09/metro-diner-3001-e-11th-st-rt.html%22) before all the lights are gone. That entry also has a link to my Metro Diner Flickr photoset, where I posted up a handful of pics of both the exterior and interior of this landmark.

The Metro's marquee this week said it will be closing on Sunday, Nov. 26.

I've been told there will be an auction of the contents in December sometime.

Heard a few of the results of the auction today...

The sign... that I would have thought would be something sought after by the "Route 66 people" went to "Stokely Sign" price undisclosed..

From the story, it was a song...

Stokely as it reads on the search I did is an outdoor advertising sign company... In other words "Billboards".. Hear he has quite a collection of signs.

Would like to think he is somehow connected to the "66" bunch.

The irony of this, the version I heard said, the Metro Owner was looking for a Museum to donate it to for a "Tax Write Off"... He did not feel it would sell for a very high price..

Front Doors...... went for $1000 for the pair..

Adios por El Metro......

Route 66 museums, from what I heard, backed away from acquiring the sign because it's so darned big. I've been in Route 66 museums all up and down the Mother Road, and none of them have ceilings tall enough to handle it.

If they bought the "Rose Bowl" they would have enough head room no...?

Oh well.. Just hate to see the sign and the place go..

The owner can rest easy now that the "Metro" is gone......In his "Own private Quiznos Heaven"

The Metro Diner on old route 66 is not a US 66 icon.  Correct me if I am wrong, but the cafe has only been in operation for about 20 years in the 11th St. location.  The outside neon sign is relatively new, in historic perspectives.  I am just as sad as anyone to see this place go, but we have suffered far more serious Rt. 66 demises than this place.  And IMO, the food was no better than standard burger joint fare.
I think the real losses along 11th street have been the old motor courts with their wonderful animated neon signs.  My favorite was the old Will Rogers Motor Court with its bucking horse animated sign in multi-colored neon.
The owner of the Metro Diner can choose to relocate if he desires, and can move the signage and any fixtures he chooses to keep, I presume.  Apparently, they have chosen not to.

[8D]thats what I thought it wasnt as old as people think I can remember my mom taking me there when she worked downtown and that was in the 1980's. Its just a way to auction off stuff for more money than its worth. I work with a lady that her daughter went to the auction and paid 25.00 for a tile from the outside of the building.
