What a cool looking house. Sure goes to show you that "functionally obsolete" is in the eye of the beholder.
I drive by this house everyday, it's certainly impressive. I saw a listing in the paper for it several months ago with a VERY high price tag. I'm surprised that the opening bid is only $50,000 now.
I have seen this same company advertise for many of their auctions, and they tend to have fairly low starting bids. Probably because they want to draw in many people. If you start at $200,000, many won't even show up. When you have large crowds, you create a feel of high demand, so the final bids are generally very high.
They are having an open house this Sunday aren't they? I'd like to see it.
The comment about functional obsolescence made me wonder if anyone else has seen the "mansions" that have been made out of converted missle silos?

Went to the open house last Sunday. It's a spectacular renovation, however, the house is a little unliveable. Dangerous staircases and smallish living areas.
The house was listed for $800,000 -- a little steep -- but the reason the owners went with Williams Auctions was because no one could really give the owner a true idea of its cost. The bidding will be fast and furious I'm sure and I bet is sells for between $250,000 to $400,000. I have been to several Williams Auctions and the process is very fast and exciting. Expect to see a lot more auctions around town. They do an excellent job of marketing and selling homes.
What to do on a rainy Sunday afternoon? My wife and I went out to see it yesterday.
It's a really neat property, though having Bird Creek on one side a busy highway on another, and a rough neighborhood not far outside the gate makes the location less desireable than houses with a similar price tag. I have to admrire Mr. Fleming for his vision in turning it into something special.
One thing that stood out was the rail-less staircase in the main room and the spiral staircase in the north stack, neither would be a good thing to have if you were in frail health, recovering from a broken leg, or just clumsy like I am!
My wife speculated she thought it would bring around $300K. I'll be interested to see what it brings.
Missile bases is cool. I happen to know of a cold war era nuclear bunker south of Tulsa that "could" be for sale. 35k square feet!
Does anyone know what the final selling price was for the house? I use to play in it when it was abaonded back in the late 60's and took the tour last Sunday and am dieing to hear what the house sold for.

That's sounds about right. Build a house that size on that size lot out about 111th & Yale and it would be double.
The owner is considering it so the deal's not final. He wanted more.

Naaa, only gated, "french country," cookie-cutter, houses sell out there--this one is waaaay too unique. Where in the world would you park your SUV, without a three car garage? Maybe somewhere in mid-town.
It's not really a family friendly house either. The curved staircase to the master suite is a tad scary. I can't imagine having to get up in the middle of the night to get a drink of water. The hot tub in the living room is a little weird, too.

I don't see how he could expect to get more out of it, it's charming and secluded, but it's right off a very rough and neglected neighborhood. Not to mention, I bet you wind up with all sorts of interesting FOD in the back yard when Bird Creek floods.
I thought it was beautiful but too chopped up the rooms were so small for such a huge building I would have thought they would have been more open and spacious and the master bedroom was barely large enough to hold the full size bed.
