It was 1973 and he was finally going to meet his idol, Western Swing legend Bob Wills, eager to settle in for a long talk. But the night before their meeting in Dallas, Wills had a stroke and went into a life-ending coma. He died two years later.

Now Benson is getting a do-over.

In a "Ride With Bob," his two-act musical that opens Thursday in San Antonio and will play the Kennedy Center in Washington later this year, Benson finally gets to have that conversation when the "Spirit of Bob" visits his band's bus.
