Title: Oklahoma Higher Education Spending
Post by: SXSW on April 24, 2006, 12:38:48 AM
Saw this at KOTV.  Who here favors a tax cut over helping better our state's universities?  Rep. Hiett is an idiot, Oklahoma needs more spending NOT TAX CUTS!  We need to write our legislators and let them know what we think.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Higher education officials are pushing for Oklahoma's first one billion-dollar budget for state colleges and universities.

It's a budget battle that could come down to tax cuts versus diplomas.

The state Senate has approved a $976-million allocation for Oklahoma's 25 colleges and universities that includes $87-million in new spending.

Increasing higher education's budget means there is less of a chance for substantial tuition increases for the state's 235,000 college students.

But the state House has so far been unwilling to fulfill more than about one-fifth of the regents' $123-million request.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Todd Hiett continues to pursue a tax-cut plan that would reduce state revenue by more than $500-million when fully implemented.
