I thought the tea party types ran for office in an effort to reduce corruption in government rather than add to it.

That'll teach you to think. Don't do that.
;D
Here are some vids on this DA at the center of this mess:
Here's a link regarding this story as well. Waiting to see how this plays out.

Shady actions...probably make him more electable with the RWRE. Look how twice convicted Oliver North has been converted by Sean Hannity into a "Great American Hero"....
Can you imagine all the indictments of Obama if he were held to a similar standard in terms of coercion and abuse of power? How about any politician for that matter? That's what makes it even more obvious he was targeted based on future political ambitions. Either that or retribution for his actions securing the Texas border.
Predictable statements from the Texas Dim party. Isn't Joaquin Castro's twin brother on the short list of Dim hopefuls in '16? He got the Bill Clinton/Obama debutante treatment at the '12 Democratic Convention.
Quote"I am outraged and appalled that the Grand Jury has taken this action, given the governor's constitutional right and duty to veto funding as he deems appropriate. This clearly represents political abuse of the court system and there is no legal basis in this decision. The facts of this case conclude that the governor's veto was lawful, appropriate and well within the authority of the office of the governor. Today's action, which violates the separation of powers outlined in the Texas Constitution, is nothing more than an effort to weaken the constitutional authority granted to the office of Texas governor, and sets a dangerous precedent by allowing a grand jury to punish the exercise of a lawful and constitutional authority afforded to the Texas governor."
Perry's office released a statement from his official counsel about an hour after his indictment saying:
"The veto in question was made in accordance with the veto authority afforded to every governor under the Texas Constitution. We will continue to aggressively defend the governor's lawful and constitutional action, and believe we will ultimately prevail.
...
The Public Integrity Unit has three divisions; one looks at insurance fraud, for example, someone selling fake insurance policies. Another handles tax fraud involving motor fuels or businesses not paying gasoline taxes. The third division takes on accusations of fraud against state programs as well as accusations of corruption by politicians or other public officials.
Calls for resignation
Shortly after the indictment was announced, Gilberto Hinojosa, president of the Texas Democratic Party, released a statement calling for the Governor to step down.
"We call on Governor Perry to immediately step down from office," he said." Texans deserve real leadership and this is unbecoming of our Governor."
Democratic congressman Joaquin Castro, who represents the San Antonio area, tweeted calling for Perry's resignation.
This piece from Think Progress is a fairly straight forward explanation of the events and politics surrounding these indictments, and it covers some of the conflicting law regarding the governor's veto power versus restrictions on office holder's authority.

I didn't check the link, but I'm sure "Think Progress" offered a very unbiased view of the situation.
I bet one of the GOP house organs will clearly show the opposite view.
Let someone post a middle leaning analysis and I'll bite.

Conan, the Think Progress piece is more factual reporting than opinion. The bit about the constitutional conflict is toward the end, and unlike some of their articles, this one is fairly straight.

David Axelrod is not even buying this crap indictment. But gather up the popcorn and be entertained.

Sorry. I stopped drinking beer for about 7 or 8 years, though I bought a six pack a couple of weeks ago, breaking that long run. I was dreaming about beer. But the proteins cause pain and that makes it easier to avoid. I only drink until it aches - about 1 or 2 a week.
I'm such a wimp.

There's a lot of different styles available. If the proteins in beer cause pain maybe you could try mead. It's basically wine made from honey instead of grapes.
Mead? Will I develop a sudden urge to tug my forelock, address people as "m'lord", and dress in furs like a 60s Sonny Bono?
Okay. I'm in.

Think more along the line of Celts, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings. Or, if you prefer, think of the ancient Greeks.
(Sorry about the thread drift. Is it time to mention Marshall's?)

Now now. Legal troubles never stopped a person for running for president. Or put the brakes on a presidency while those troubles worked their way through the courts. There's this, for example.

No idea if this is even accurate, but darned funny.
Here is the habeas petition filed by the Perry side seeking adjudication on the indictment.
