Going in on Brookside.....
Where in Brookside?
The old club space....Suede....
Was just at the Urban Outfitters yesterday here in Dallas (at "market" hunting goodies for the shop), and noticed they had a lot of the same gift items we have in our shop downtown. But our shop is still way cooler ;D Glad to hear they are coming to Tulsa though, will be nice to have a place to get some "skinny people" clothes at an affordable price in T-town.
What will they do with the roof top patio?
Awesome.
Let's hope this attracts more retail to Brookside and in particular locally owned retail.
My brother visited Tulsa from Chicago for Tulsa Tough. He wanted to buy new clothes from a local shop. I was hard pressed to find one and he left empty handed. Even the local clothing retailer we visited could only recommend one other local clothing store.

I thought this would probably go into Utica Square with their sister store Anthropologie. I like seeing the mix of retail and restaurants in Brookside. Building up the most walkable part, between 33rd and 36th, is important. The Mecca coffee building and parking lot could support more businesses if redeveloped, as well as the former Blockbuster at 36th if it met the street and extended up to the Starbucks. Some kind of outdoor restaurant on Crow Creek would be nice, especially once there is a trail linking Brookside to the river.
Brookside is an interesting choice. Utica Sq. seems like a better retail choice (and would have been a better use of the former Pier One space than a furniture store), but then again Utica Sq. may not really fit their vide This store could really help drive foot traffic for a Brookside area that seems a little in the doldrums with the ascendance of downtown and Cherry St.
Any links to show this is actually happening?

What about Aberson's?
This is normal for Urban Outfitters. Many of their stores are in non-shopping center type areas. They do have one in the Plaza in KC, similar to Utica, but then they have one just off the UT Campus in Austin.
I was told about this last night from someone who knows the construction company doing the work, so it seems the rumor has legs.

Ironically, didn't think of that one. He is much younger than I, in his mid-20's. Not sure if Abersons would have fit the bill.

According to the web site, they have $115 khaki shorts, $249 button down shirts, and $189 loafers. I'm sure that appeals to someone, just not me. Either everyone else who would shop there makes double/triple+++ what I do or they don't have any hobbies, don't have a child at college, and don't have any savings goals.

They definitely gutted the old Suede/Ivy space. Any actual confirmation of Urban Outfitters going in here? It seems the empty Wolfgang Puck space would have better visibility and more space but maybe the owners want another restaurant there for the same reasons. I'm surprised that space and Ciao are still vacant.
On another note regarding Brookside, I've noticed the street planters closer to 36th are well taken care of with new flowers and trees planted in the median. But around 33rd they are overgrown with weeds or empty and it looks terrible. Are they just waiting to do that part or do the business owners not care? I figured the Brookside merchants assoc. handled the landscaping but maybe not.

QuoteUrban Outfitters is bringing its stylish brand to Tulsa with the opening next year of a store at 3340 S. Peoria Ave.
Although the company has not released details about the future site, a representative with Urban Outfitters in an email earlier confirmed that the store will be opening in the Tulsa area. It will be the retailer's first store in Oklahoma.
The two-story, 9,000-square-foot store, scheduled to open in mid-February 2015, will be comparable in size to any of the retailer's major stores located in the Southwest, said Henry Aberson of Aberson Development.
Urban Outfitters offers an eclectic mix of merchandise, including men's and women's apparel and home accessories. It operates more than 130 stores in the United States, Canada and Europe.
"Urban Outfitters is an international brand, and they're definitely one of the leading international retailers in the United States," said Aberson. "They are heavily expanding into Europe."

They won't (directly) get any of mine, either, but I'm a 50 year old man. My 16YO daughter on the other hand, has been waiting expectantly for UO to open up. They sell vinyl, so if they have a record I want that I can't get at a local shop I'll buy from them versus an online retailer. But, that is about it.

Starship doesn't have it?? Whatever it is.... Bet they will get it for ya.
Happened to drive by there about 7:45 last night. Place was so jammed that they may have been limiting entrance. The line to the food truck outside was huge, and the entire sidewalk was blocked. Obviously the furor will soon die down, but I was surprised at how many people turned out for the opening.
This store will draw a lot of shoppers to Brookside who never went there in the past - especially the tourist shoppers who usually only hit Utica Sq. and Woodland Hills. The spillover of the added foot traffic for the other businesses will be significant.

I will certainly stop by this place at some point down the road. I will be going to some restaurant and go "hey, isn't there some new store that's a big deal?" I will then walk in and see some interesting things, and some shockingly expensive horrible things. I doubt I will refuse to buy something from them out of principle... I will likely refuse to buy something from them because they have nothing for me worth the prices they are commanding. Which saves me the trouble of standing on principle. (or failing therein).
Just googled them... and looked at some of their stores. Nothing terrible really. Prices aren't horrid. Seems like a nice story for twenty somethings hipsters and fashionistas. Good for them.
If I ever want skinny jeans, I know where to go.
In a past life (college) I would go to the Urban Outfitters in Dallas at Mockingbird Station. And still own some extremely comfy T-shirts shockingly. Also been to Philly & New York stores. However, last summer I visited a store in a trendy part of Chicago and was extremely let down. It used to have this hipster/bohemian thing working for it, but as far as I can tell that ship has sailed. Most of the women's clothes appeared to be second hand/torn/scantily clad or dominatrix leather, and the menswear went past hipster into homeless. In it's defense the store's are always very nice and clean and trendy looking. All in all, my wife were in and out in about 2 minutes after giving each other quit a few weird looks.
When there is competition, I don't know how this place will hold it's own, especially now that they are trying to set the trend, as opposed to bucking the trend as they had in the past.
All in all, this is a pretty big name that would have been far more significant to Tulsa 10 years ago. I'm not discounting Tulsa or anything, but I think this is an example of a store completely saturating the markets it has already entered and finally hitting the new markets when same store sales won't add the extra revenue that is so highly desired.
I really don't know what the big deal is actually. Have been to one in Dallas several times and was underwhelmed. First time chalked it up to them perhaps changing out inventory and thus perhaps not having much out. Second time went, same thing. The other thing that irked me was "We sell a lot of the same gift things in DECOPOLIS,". You would think a store with their reputation would have more unique items. For example we have the paddywax apothecary candles that everyone is so fond of ("Tobacco Pachouli" is a top seller, sounds gross, smells incredible.) We also have a lot of the same fun books and many other gift items. Guess since they are out of Austin they go to the Dallas Market Center like we do to find products. Though we still have a wider range of more interesting gift items and fun books than they do, I think it is time we up our game and go further afield to find stuff that is even gooder and begin creating more of our own. I think someone on this forum recently got a plushy "Blue Police Box" (not to be mistaken for a Tardis... ok well kinda sorta to be mistaken for one) for a gift that we make here at DECOPOLIS. ;)
Their clothes aren't that unique or great, but it is nice to have another place to buy skinny jeans. ;D
Someday people in Austin will be lining the streets to get into a DECOPOLIS store there. "OMG, did you hear, we are finally able to rank one of those great stores from Tulsa!" That's the kind of thing people and city leaders should be shooting for here, not just working to bring in this or that store from elsewhere, but supporting the local guys to make it big and bring in the bacon from other cities.

I was there and 15 at the time. What a hot and fun day that was.
Then the next year Waylon & Willie put and end to the speedway concerts. Country music rowdies trashed the surrounding neighborhoods and that was that.
Gladly I did not attend that one.
I went to both of these shows.
At the Frampton show, the lines were too long to go on the walkway between the infield and the stands so me and my friend decided to climb the 20 foot high fence. As I got to the top and crossed over, I lost my grip and fell to the ground. A bunch of people came to my aid and revived me with free beer.

The Fall of the Hipster Brand: Inside the Decline of American Apparel and Urban Outfitters

I don't think it'll last more than 3-4 years. Even hipsters are starting to think it's not so hip. With their business model declining nationwide I find it strange that they would move to Tulsa, especially considering the investment they seem to have made by renovating the building and enclosing the entire third floor.
Quote from: DowntownDan on March 25, 2015, 10:01:10 AM
I don't think it'll last more than 3-4 years. Even hipsters are starting to think it's not so hip.
Isn't that always the case with "hipsters"? Pretty much by definition they are looking for the clothes/music/look no one else is wearing/listening/doing and anything that is widely popular is no longer "hip" in their eyes. Stores like Urban Outfitters thrive by being nimble and adjusting to the rapidly changing whims of their target market - which is not really the hipsters, but the hipster wannabes and imitators.
The negativity towards Urban Outfitters on here surprises me. I get it, if you're 50+ and wear khakis and a polo shirt to work every day, this store probably doesn't have much to offer you. For a lot of 15-40 year olds, however, getting an Urban Outfitters is a sort of validation for Tulsa on the coolness scale. I'm glad it's hear and believe it will help drive a lot of local and out of towners to Brookside that haven't been going there in the past.
And, for what it's worth, I'm 50 and have been in the Tulsa store a couple of times and I think it has some interesting stuff in the same price points as Banana Republic and similar stores. I even bought a pair of Vans (not the checkeredboards, that would be clichéd) - something I haven't done since college.

After Years of Mediocrity, Tulsa Emerging as Hipster Hub
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESSMARCH 24, 2015, 2:20 P.M. E.D.T.
TULSA, Okla. — Punching far above their weight, starry-eyed Tulsans have tried for years to demonstrate to fellow Oklahomans and outsiders alike that the state's second-largest city was more funky and less in a funk.
