Title: Mmm Beer....
Post by: DolfanBob on December 09, 2013, 10:34:25 AM
I knew this would happen after I stopped drinking Beer a year and a half ago. Hell I was a cornerstone of the industry.

All pretty crappy beers, too... :)

Yep a bunch of unremarkable swill.  One of the worst hangovers I ever had was the result of LaBatt's Blue.

Too many good micro/regional brews that are so much better. A new one just opened in Coos Bay, 7 Devils Brewing that I need to go check out.

I've been really surprised at the comeback that Pearl is making...that crap is crap.

No way. I had not heard that Pearl was making a comeback. The best thing it had was the puzzles inside the caps. The real sad thing is. Me and my buddies did drink a lot of Pearl back in the day.

Is it mainly the hipster crowd?  I started buying Lone Star again last year after drinking it rarely after high school.  I guess I wasn't even aware that Pearl was still around.

Anyone ever drink Scotch Buy (Safeway) or QT beer when you were dead broke?  Hamm's and Black Label were another cheapo.  If I remember right, Whorehouse Market would have it for $1.59 or $1.99 a six pack.

We had a saying about QT beer when I was in high school. "Quitin' Time Beer, smooth, but nasty"

In college we drank Weidemans. I think it was like $5 a case for bottles.

Hamm's is quite popular here in the PNW, some bars have it on tap next to PBR. Lone Star, I remember driving to TX and bringing it back to Tulsa in the early 80's. Pearl, remeber buying that when it was $8.00 a case. Somewhere I think I have an empty QT beer can, didn't they sell that for like $1.85 a six pack?

haha, I 've got a sixer of LS in the fridge right now.

The only reason I have it is because I saw Matthew McConaughey's character in "True Detective" drink a smileload of it during the course of the series.  I then realized it was the only beer on the show.  Wonder how much they paid HBO or whomever for that product placement.  Because after having one bottle of it last week, I dubbed it 'mediocre'.

It's one of those lagers that ebbs and flows in popularity, most all those are in the mediocre category.  I'd like to get ahold of some Grain Belt beer as another example, but it doesn't seem to be distributed far outside of Minnesota.

I've been drinking quite a bit of Shock Top lately.  I know, I know..it's an InBev product, but it's scary tasty as far as witbiers go.  I'm only buying them from the liqour stores though.  I'm going through my spring witbier phase and need to find a good one to try that's different.  I'm likely out to get another 12 of it today as well as maybe some Prairie

I'm going to collin's..I'll see if they have Grain Belt.  They do have quite the selection for sure

Since I'm moving more or less around the corner, Collins will likely become my new regular beer spot, their selection is pretty hard to beat.  My latest style is Kolsch.  I've got some home-brew in the kegerator right now and another fermenting.  A typical example of Kolsch will have up to 20% wheat in the malt and it uses a unique yeast. Fruh seems to be the only commercially-available genuine Cologne Kolsch in Oklahoma at the moment.  Along those lines, Ayinger has some good witbier.  I'll have to see what the one was I just had the other night.  Damn tasty.

You guys are way too young to be drinking beer.  ;D

I remember when full strength Bud was $5/case of 24 cans ($4 when a friend's mom got it at the PX).  Using the inflation calculator, $5 would be $28.99 now.  About $7.25/6-pack, relatively inexpensive compared to the beer I like now.

$5 a case was damn cheap. And it was not great beer, but it was the right price.

I also had a great little bar behind one apartment that had dollar 32 oz schooner nights. If you drank 10 of them in one night, they put your name on the wall.

Doesn't look like it has changed much except these days it's $3 domestic Schooner Night.

Is Milwaukee's Worst still made? I can only hope the out of State stronger version was better than the 3.2 swill sold here.

I did it at the Eastland Mall location. Yeah there were some really crappy beers, especially the Chinese and some of the European ones. Got those out of the way quickly.

Bible Belt= disappointment.  Bomb is a better beer.

Prairie gets all the hype right now so anything Chase releases, people claim it's awesome.  Yes, they have done some really creative brews but they do some stuff that just doesn't register with my palate.  Potlatch is one that was completely lost on me unless a flavor inspired by the smell of a new vinyl shower curtain is supposed to be the latest in artesian brewing.

Major props to Prairie for developing a national distribution network, but I'm hearing more and more people getting disenchanted with product shortages in their home market, especially for their limited release brews.  Marshall's has always considered Tulsa first priority with limited releases and I appreciate that.

Rumors are floating around there's yet another Tulsa brewery coming on line in the near future.  No more word out of the guys in Stillwater who are building a 30 barrel brewery.  No idea if that's moving forward or stuck in perpetual sit and spin mode.

I caught a blurb in the on-line edition of the Tulsa World yesterday that Dead Armadillo is actively looking for a building in Tulsa to start brewing here.  They can't keep up with capacity gypsy brewing at Roughtail in Midwest City and it the article said it's also tying up Roughtail's capacity.

In Wisconsin, at that.  Got a sixer when it came out, didn't bother to get another.  I thought Tom was being kind including it in the top 10 list. Malt was good on that one but for a beer called Mmmmmhops, I'd expect something that fell out of a pine tree.  Roughtail IPA and 12th round both are better candidates for a top 10 list than Mmmmhops.

When in the City. I always made a effort to stop in and have a bite to eat and do the beer sampler. Bricktown Brewery is a pretty cool place.
But I avoid the 96th street exit in Owasso like I do 71st. Might have to swing in someday after the bugs get worked out.

At least some of those beer names are real.

Very funny too.

Never tried any of them, although I have drank some of Anchor's offering, as well as Avery's "Dirty Blonde", which is a great session beer.  I might try one or ten of those.   ;D

Not sure how you couldn't include Big Jamoke in there, since it's in season for Christmas, and has that cocoa aftertaste.  I could drink Jamoke all day long but would get nothing done.

EDIT:  noticed that the title was for 'spiced beers', so understand now why Jamoke wouldn't be in there.

Still...

Two of those knocked me on my "Big Jamoke" I loved em. Great taste and effect. :P

This year so far I have only consumed Anchor's 40th Christmas Ale.  It's available in 12 oz bottles.  I like it.

I have had Bridgeport's "Ebenezer", Great Divide's "Hibernation" and Avery's "Old Jubilation" in the past.  I liked them all.  High Gravity's "Old St. Nick Ale" is inspired by "Old Jubilation".  I brewed it one year and everyone liked it. It was High Gravity's Christmas Ale several years ago.

We do a brew we call "liquid gingerbread".  It's an English nut brown ale base spiced with typical spices you'd find in a ginger snap.  Instead of molasses, I use some dark brown sugar.  Anyone who has tried it loves it.  It's a nice session beer at about 5% ABV.

I'm with Hoss.  My idea in the past about seasonal beers was getting Big Jamoke or other seasonal porters, stouts, and heavys.  I'm pretty new to spiced beers.

The wife and I are big fans of the Shiner Cheer.  I stocked a case in the basement beer fridge the day before Thanksgiving and it's down to a bottle or two.

Without labeling myself an alcoholic, I also bought a 750 ml bottle of Bulliet Rye Whiskey, eight cans of ginger beer (Moscow Mules) and three other various six packs.  All but the beer is now gone.

Anyone know local AA meeting times?

Oh...I LOVE Bulleit's bourbon.  I'll have to try the Rye.

I like both.  Their bourbon isn't my favorite bourbon, but their rye is my favorite of those sold locally.  My favorite American whiskey right now is a George Dickel Nine Year Sour Mash that I purchased from Caskers.com.  It is about 8% rye, but I really like its smooth profile.

Link to their site.  They send out an email every few days about their selections.  Some of it is available in Oklahoma, but most is not  They'll ship to my office here in Tulsa.  https://www.caskers.com/?ref=MDoyOjFlNTliYzM0ZjdmMmY1YTQ6YTk5dHhqb2NrYXliNFo2YVdMTURXUT09

I will take you up on that.  Big fan of Bullet Rye, but always open to options.  Do you have a suggestion?

Meh, only popular because of prohibition and illegal bootlegging into the US.  Pretty much all Canadian whiskey is a "rye whiskey".  Rye whiskey was hardly distilled in the US for the last sixty years.  With the resurgence in whiskey I believe the craft whiskey movement in America will produce great products.

That said, Pendeleton's Rye is a nice whiskey.  But, even its packaged and sold in Oregon after distilling in Canada.  Masterson's is another good Canadian Rye.  I've had it in the Tobacco Old Fashioned at Hodge's Bend and its tasty in that drink.

The AA I work for has a zero tolerance policy toward alcohol and drugs. They'll put an employee through alcohol rehab once, but subsequent rehabs are paid out of pocket. After that first visit, the employee is subject to random testing at least once a month. Because of the relatively small candidate pool, it sometimes works out to once a week.

Any positive drug test is grounds for dismissal. This bothers me because my government can't force me to piss in a bottle to prove I'm drug free, yet my employer can do so at the behest of the government.

This has been an interesting thread. I'm thinking about getting some good whiskey for the holidays, and you are all giving me some great ideas.

Since we have moved on to whiskey...

Have you guys tried the Oklahoma made bourbon? The brand is Scissortail and it is distilled in Moore. Here is a review...

http://okchive.com/threads/2014/10/09/the-bearded-baron-of-bourbon-review-scissortail-bourbon/

I bought some bottles for out-of-state friends. It is medium priced. It was a fun novelty, but I would rather drink Bulleit.
