Title: Barbershop Throwdown
Post by: sgrizzle on September 16, 2013, 06:40:40 PM
Gill's Barbershop was located in the strip center just north of 71st and Sheridan. Recently the signs came down and new signs for "Charlie Gill's Barbershop" appeared in a strip mall just around the corner, east of 71st in Sheridan. Then suddenly the old location gained signs for the "Original Gill Family Barbershop"

I'm not sure who the Gill family is, or what they do to hair, but this seems to be a lot of drama around a business that I had no idea even had customers.

Sound like mission accomplished, then.

43 years ago, I met Charlie Gill and received my first haircut with many tears.  My father and most of the physicians at St.Francis hospital had frequently visited Charlie's place in the Holliday Hills shopping center on 61st and Yale since the mid 60s. When the center was remodeled he moved to the 71st and Sheridan location. Even into the 80s, Charlie still had the old fashioned coke machine where you had to pull out the bottles and he never accepted anything but cash for a haircut.  Golf was always the topic of conversation.

He died in 2012 and it seems his family is still battling over his business.
