The Tulsa World is saying that Food Pyramid is leaving Tulsa. Three of the remaining five stores (Brookside, 51st & Harvard, and 71st & Garnett) are being sold to Reasors. The other two stores and the closed store at 101st and Memorial are being looked at by a nation chain. The article doesn't say who.
Not a loss for me, I very rarely shopped there.

Wonder if they will convert the three to actual Reasors stores or leave them as-is like the faux Reasors on Sheridan.

So now it's Reasors, Wal-Mart, Neighborhood Mkt, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Sprouts, and a few other high-priced stores.
I never shopped @ Food Pyramid, but I assume they were providing some needed competition in the reasonably priced category.
I recently moved near 41st & Yale. That Reasors blows. The Food Pyramid @ 51st & Harvard also blows. (looking forward to Sprouts).
With two Reasors so relatively close, I'm hoping they'll
1: remodel 51st & Harvard before reopening as Reasors
2: once open, temporarily close 41st & Yale for remodeling

That link shows the page for about a second, then diverts to a "page not found."
Noticed several TW stories doing that today.

I think the one on Sheridan was built as a Reasors, wasn't it? It's just old. They do need to redo that store and the one at 41st and Yale.

Which one on Sheridan? 71st? That was an old Price Mart way back when I was in high school.
Was it? I only vaguely recall that chain. They were pretty bad stores weren't they?
Better than Reasons. IMO of course.
If they follow what they did on the remodel of the 15 th and Lewis store they will not close but will remodel around the open store. Some great sale prices getting rid of product lines they don't carry. I went to the Sprouts on Memorial and thought it was a Whole Foods wannabe. Not impressed. Just wish we could get a HEB here. Hopefully Reasors will include some of the stuff they have in the Bixby store in these new locations.
Who is the new "national" chain? Dillons?

**cough, cough** Kroger. Actually I shopped at a Dillon's IGA in Joplin years ago and they were pretty good. Have been shopping at Fred Meyer/Smith's/Fry's (all Kroger) for several years and they are pretty good. Better than Wally World, little more expensive, but at least the shelves are stocked, and quality products, and I don't feel like I need to be checked for scurvy after being in the store.
The Reasors at 101st and Elm was also a Price Mart. I had all but forgot about them.
The mentioning of IGA makes me think of the one that I shopped at 91st and Elm that was a "Consumers IGA" I liked it.
Also. I see nobody mentioned "Warehouse Market" which is probably a good thing. ::)

Warehouse Market, the store that makes Wal-Mart look fancy. How do those places stay in business? Their parking lots always look so empty.
Crest in central Oklahoma is doing kind of the Reasor's thing for that part of the state. Not a bad store....
There is still a Piggly Wiggly in Collinsville...I remember the one that was at 31st and Yale long, long ago....just across the street from Scotty's Hamburgers.
Piggly Wiggly? Now we're talkin. I remember one on North Peoria and one in East Tulsa. Not real sure though. 21st or 31st and 129th I think.

The only store I remember in that area from the mid-50s on was Jitney Jungle, which became Sam's, which became Bud's, which is now a storage place. No Piggly Wiggly anywhere around there. What did I miss?
The updated article in the paper this morning said that the national company approached Food Pyramid to buy the other three stores and that it is NOT a grocery store chain. Who could that be?

It was 32nd on west side of street. I think Jitney Jungle was over on Peoria about 40th something...we used to go there too. Up on north Sheridan, too, but that was gone by the time my traffic pattern moved over there.
Past posts talk about Jamil's using "Jitney Jungle" steaks from 32nd & Harvard, also being used by the Oertle's picnic - I don't remember that one at all - out of my traffic pattern at the time. I used to love going to the old Oertle's...and the 11th and Elgin Warehouse Market....

There are still quite a few scattered about, especially in the deep south. There's one in Dothan, AL that claims to beat everyone's meat. (yes, that is the phrase they use) I'm surprised they're still there, given that there are 3 or so Wal-Marts, 4 or so Winn Dixie stores, at least two (new in the last couple of years) Publix, and a couple of other independent grocers in a city of 80,000.

I really like my Reasors at 15th and Lewis. It's smaller than the others so there is a slightly lesser selection but it's barely noticeable. I think the meat quality is better there but maybe its just bias. I never liked Food Pyramids. They reminded me of Homeland, which I also didn't like. I like seeing Reasors doing well. Their prices are about where they should be. Wal-Mart markets are a tad cheaper, but Whole Foods and the other specialty markets opening up are much higher. Warehouse Market and the super saver type stores are cheaper than Reasors but I always feel like i'll get salmonella just from walking in those places. I don't live near an Aldi's but I've been to one and did a price comparison for fun. It wasn't any cheaper than buying generics at Wal-Mart or even Reasors on a bunch of items. Reasor's is also better than Albertsons because from what I recall they had really high prices. Reasors doesn't do that from my experiences.

I like Reasors too. The one in Jenks is a really good store with a good selection and anything they don't have they will get. Their own brand of meats is all natural and cage free and is mostly locally sourced. Topeca is the supplier for their house coffee.
There's not a whole lot that you can get at Fresh Market or Whole Foods that you can't at Reasors, at least the ones in Jenks and Bixby. Reasors is missing some import stuff and the variety of cheese, fresh organic meat and fresh foods isn't as good but it's not a huge difference. Whole foods does have better prepared foods. Sprouts has nothing to make me go there over Reasors.
They said in the World that all the former Food Pyramid stores would be renovated and the Brookside store will actually close for awhile to be completely redone.
If Reasors ever stop offering paper bags they will probably lose my business. That is all the little woman will allow our groceries to be put in.
I'm positive that I could save big money at Wal Mart but they only do plastic.

Use your own bags...just happens that I got a couple from Walmart that are hard sided and hold as much as 3 or 4 plastic. But then, if you don't have the plastic, there ain't nothing to put the great grandkid's diapers in when they are through with them....

WalMart has easy recycling of plastic bags. There are several big boxes at the entrance to put them in. They will take any stores' plastic bags.

They often still wind up in the dumpster. Wal-Mart corporate says one thing and store managers do another.
That is why I collect plastic bags at M.e.t. sites. I can't make any money, but they are easy to recycle.

Warehouse does good business and locate their stores in under served areas with lower average income. I live in Kendall Whittier and there is a WM that does great business. While they may be lacking in curb appeal, they generally have good prices, better sales, and they always have enough checkers and open additional registers when there's a line of only 2-3 people. Wal-mart runs the leanest staff possible and leads consumers to believe it's worth waiting in line. It's not; the prices are only marginally less. But the trick of Walmart is the prices are less on many products to bring you in the store, but when you stock up on stables, other things are higher. It's their pricing strategy and they actually get more money that way. And then they make you wait in long crappy lines to check out, never opening additional registers.

I usually go to the WM on 11th and Garnett; however lately since I work about 1.5 miles from it, I will go to the 31st/Sheridan location.
When I do grocery shopping at WM it's typically at the 21st/Yale location. It's less crowded for the most part, the lines aren't long if there are any at all, and I don't feel like I need a shower after visiting like I do the others.

Reasor's must have clean paper bags.
I have saved and recycled paper grocery bags as trash bags all my adult life and never had roaches. If one is prone to roach infestations, I'm guessing brown paper bags are the least of the roach draw.
Never did much shopping at Food Pyramid because none were on any of my beaten paths. I was sad a few years ago when Reasor's bought the Albertson's that were on my usual routes. Now, I'm sad again that Reasor's is buying more of the stores it didn't get the first time. Tulsa needs some variety in that price range.
I went to the Food Pyramid at 51st and Memorial today. They said they are closing September 3 and the store was turning into a fitness gym.

Nice clean stores and their grocery selection is top notch.
Of course from what I understand they won't move here due to our idiotic liquor laws.
The ones I went to in Ohio seemed somewhere between a Super Target and WMT Supercenter. If we're fantasizing about grocery stores, there are only two: Publix and Wegman's.
