I've seen numerous common water snakes and diamond back water snakes in the park. They're bad tempered and shouldn't be handled, but they're not poisonous. Still, some people's initial reaction is, "It's a snake! Kill it!" Hence this photo.

Over the weekend, a woman told me there were copperheads in the park too, black ones with yellow bellies. These would be western racers, handsome, blue-black snakes that are better mousers than any cat. Shortly afterward, another passerby warned me about "fuzzy tailed rattlesnakes."
Now, I ask you, what the hell is a fuzzy tailed rattlesnake?
I practice capture and release at my house.
I don't look cool doing it but when that snake is placed in the water retention area at 111th and Yale, it is unharmed.
I practice the "kill and be done with it" method when it comes to snakes. It never hurts to be on the side of safety, human safety should always come first when there is any question of danger. This is even more so if kids are in the area or the snakes are found around a house.
