Title: Swinney's hardware 2nd and Lewis?
Post by: tulsascoot on March 02, 2013, 11:15:14 PM
Lot of activity there including a new entrance facade going up. Any scoop on what they are doing with the place?

If you're a tweeter ask Ed Sharrer.  He's the head of the Kendall Whitter group.  He'll probably have some insight.

Now believe it or not (and I have been known to lie) - what I heard is the buyer is someone who has a furniture store on 11th and is either relocating or expanding into that area. Supposedly they are taking a section of Swinney's for themselves and walling off the remainder into 3 or so more portions to rent out separately. They paid $700k for the property and aren't spending much to revamp it - apparently a bargain bin remodel so don't expect much from it.

Restaurants projected in future for Kendall-Whittier neighborhood

The old Swinney's Hardware store will become an antique gallery, possible with space for a restaurant and beauty salon.

The space that held Swinney's Hardware in the Kendall-Whittier neighborhood for 36 years will become an antique gallery with projected room for a restaurant and beauty salon.

"We have 16,000 square feet, and we are hoping for someone to be interested in putting a restaurant in part of the space," said John Economus, a partner in the project with Dr. Warren Finn.

"This is a great space, and a lot of it still has the original tin ceilings."

Economus said the target opening date is some time in June, "but that might be optimistic."

The building is located at 32 S. Lewis Ave., on the southwest corner of First Street and Lewis Avenue, just south of the Circle Cinema.

Swinney's had operated in the Kendall-Whittier district for 74 years, including the final 36 at this address before closing in 2008.

Sources say another space, which has held several restaurants over the years, just north of the Circle Cinema is likely to attract another restaurateur this year.

(Sigh.) I remember when that space was a TG&Y.

Other restaurants in the space on 1st have not fared so well, I hope there is a real renaissance happening that will help them thrive.
