Title: Who owns TU?
Post by: patric on June 08, 2005, 02:34:27 PM
In a rare, preemptive rebuttal to a letter to the editor, the Tulsa Whirled attempted to counter criticism of the University of Tulsa's private appropriation of property condemned by the City.
Robert F. Leblanc questioned if the U.S. constitutions due process clause (the 4th Amendment, not the 5th) was being respected if a private entity like TU was benefiting by a law intended for "public use."

The Whirled added this response today to Mr. Leblanc's May 1 letter (excerpted here within the U.S. Copyright Fair Use provision):

"...elected leaders in designating the entire TU area an urban renewal area, have decided it is in the public interest to rehabilitate the neighborhood."
"Technically, TU is a private school, but in fact belongs to the people of Tulsa and has been supported by those people for 80 years or more.  If it is private, who owns it?"

Im going to have to take a wild guess at that one ;-)
