I found an interesting article about wind turbines in a trade magazine (Machine Design) that the other geeks here might appreciate.

I like the idea for airborne turbines.  I have always wondered why no one has ever come up with a kite or balloon/blimp mounted turbine system that can use high altitude winds without taking up valuable land.

Can you imagine air traffic control trying to get planes to dodge those things?

Better to put them off shore than in the air.
