Title: Sign/Mural permit?
Post by: TheArtist on June 21, 2012, 01:11:08 PM
If a client asks me to paint a large mural/sign on the side of their building downtown.... Do we have to get a permit of some sort?   And who would I possibly contact with the city to find out?

Thanks Much

I don't think you need a permit to paint art on a building downtown, but I wonder if you might need one if you're going to use a big scaffold, or have to block off a portion of the sidewalk/street?  You might want to ask Mary Beth Babcock at Dwelling Spaces, since she recently worked with an artist to do the crazy mural on the Rose Pawn Shop building.

It's probably no different than attaching a sign to your building

Here's a broken KOTV article about some mural ordinance:

Thanks all.  No I won't be blocking much of anything.  The mural wall is next to an "alleyway" facing a parking lot so my scaffolding won't be blocking anything more than the trash containers already are lol.  And I won't be going too high up, about what I usually do for the Mayfest Mural.

I think there is a concern that the name of the business on the mural might be larger than the allowable limit?
