My damned ear buds keep breaking. For those athletes as TNF, Conan, Ed W, RM, what do you recommend? I have an iPhone, but I can buy something else.
I have a tiny Sansa 1gig mp3 player, Guido, but I haven't had much success with either the OEM ear buds or the expensive Bose ones that came as a gift at Christmas. I'm thinking about a lightweight headset. Sony makes one and it's supposed to sound OK.
Ear buds are uncomfortable as all hell, but I generally try to keep one in and one ear open for traffic and other impending danger so I don't use them in both, unless I'm on stationary equipment at the house. I use an iPod Nano BTW when I'm on the fly.
I have gone through 4 sets of ear buds and two headsets in 6 months. Maybe I'll try the nano.
I use a pair of over the ear buds. They have a glasses style arm that holds them on the ear and then the bud fits perpendicular in the ear. Allows for hearing outside noise. I've had them for several years and love them. Mine are Sony.
Sol Republic head-phones....

Ear buds are uncomfortable as all hell,
I have the same feeling with most, even the kind that have silicone earpieces rather than the standard hard plastic+foam deal, but the ones that came with my Galaxy Nexus are actually pretty darn comfortable. (they are the silicone kind, but more comfortable than most)
I think the best setup involves a stereo bluetooth headset like this Plantronics (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UBNFT2) and whatever cellphone I've been using lately either attached with an armband, in my pocket, or on my bike depending on where I'm going/what exactly I'm doing. I don't keep earbuds in my ear when riding, but I will keep one
next to my ear such that I can still easily hear outside noises.
I freakin' hate wires snaking down to my pocket or where ever.
On the rare occasion I do move at a rapid pace outdoors, I use a motorola bluetooth headset. The earplugs are rubber and it wraps around the back of your head. Very low weight, doesn't fall off, very durable.

I bought some Sony buds, so we'll see.

I need to splurge and just go this route. After all, I am now flush with cash thanks to waterboy.... :P

I paid like $30 on ebay. Thought you had richer blood than that.

Same here, I've had the same pair for a few years. Sweat doesn't bother them. $9.99 at Target

I'll go for those after these ear buds quit working. I may just go all out with top of the line stuff.
So far, so good. Hey, has anyone noticed it's getting hot outside? Just sayin...

The temperature for my lunch walk wasn't too bad, about 85. The dewpoint was typical summer though, about 71.

Actually, the air seemed the heaviest today it's been all season (spring/summer/stormy). It's really muggy out when the dewpoints are in the low to mid seventies, no matter what the temperature is. I'd like to see it rain already.
I finished my swim, I mean, run, better today than the past two days. I think the trick is a polyester shirt with a cotton shirt on top to keep the sweat off my face.

You put the cotton shirt over your face?

Yes. No. I wear both, cotton on top. I know it was a clumsy post.

It's strange how we all feel like the air is heavier with high humidity when actually it is less dense. I think it has something to do with our cooling system. Maybe our breathing system too.
I work out with an iPod Nano with ear buds. Lesson learned: get ear buds that DON'T have a mic with inline volume control, etc. Too often, sweat gets in the little inline control and starts acting possessed. It interferes with the volume or song selection control...or sometimes, it goes crazy "voice activated" on me (even though the iPod clearly shows that this is turned off). This never occurs until near the end of the workout when I have sweat running down my neck.
My next ear buds will be simple ones without the inline control. I've also seen earbuds that are waterproof to 3 feet! Presumably you could swim with them? Haven't tried those yet, but we'll see how hot it gets this summer!
So far, so good with the ear buds/headset combination. Also, rediscovered
Zebra as music to run to.
Rock out:

Just broke down and bought an iPod Classic 160gb. Got it on sale plus I sold my old iPhone 3GS I had been using as music storage. Wanted more than 16gb. First time using the clickwheel. I like it but people tell me it's not really for running because of the physical hard drive it has.
I broke down and installed iTunes and finally they make it easier to just drag/drop mp3 files into the iPod without forcing you to maintain a library. I'm sure the earlier versions did also, but they didn't make it very easy to manually sync the iPhone. Plus, I had so many problems updating iOS it damn near made my iPhone into a brick.
I am enjoying the Classic though. Can put my entire Queensryche, Rush, Boston, Foo Fighters, Motley Crue and Dokken discography on (and many more). I've barely used 5gb of the 160, but I've only had it a week.
I did keep the iPhone earbuds with the inline control, but the Classic came with one that did not have the control. I keep the one with the control in the house, use the other away from the house. Also have an iPod dock on my Onkyo HTS, so that's a plus.

I have a classic 80, but I can stream my entire library so I don't use it as much anymore. A 6th generation Nano is much better for running due to the light weight and clip.

Could probably use my Android phone to run with; have an OtterBox case and the music management is surprisingly good on it.
Plus I like using the iPod in the car. I have an auxiliary port in the stereo.
Bought two types of Blue Tooth headphones to run with. Much better exercise experience. Problem is now I have four ear bud sets (experimentals) in my truck along with these two new BT.
Blue tooth was the answer. Thanks grizz. Now, what to do with the massive increase in freakin insects outside. Last couple of nights had numerous bites on my ankles. Anyone else?

I'm surprised you didn't yell at them and call them 'ankle-biters'.

I tried running faster and name-calling, nothing worked. Maybe I should stop running in swamps in the middle of the day...

With the heat here lately, I'm surprised there are any swamps to be found at all....
