It IS Sapulpa...

Used to be a larger town than Tulsa.

The thing that made Tulsa nicer was the river and the toll to cross.  The wealthy oil folk made their homes in Tulsa because the dregs couldn't pay to cross the river each day.

The story I heard about why Tulsa passed Sapulpa in spite of the latter's head start involved the railroad. Early on the main Frisco switch yard was in Sapulpa. The city commission heard that the railroad was planning to expand the yard, so they embarked on a two step plan. Step one was to purchase (as individuals) some land out on the west side of town. Step two was to enact a city ordinance requiring any added railway facilities to be located on the newly purchased land.  The railroad said "no thanks" and moved the yard to West Tulsa. The land the commissioners bought ended up as the Sapulpa golf course. Sapulpa withered on the vine and Tulsa took off.

Well I hear tell that Tulsa took off cause it had the most, and best, Hotels and Hookers.
