Title: T.U.
Post by: DolfanBob on March 29, 2012, 12:03:04 PM
Danny Manning has been named new Head Coach for the University of Tulsa Basketball Team.
I think its a great hire. Give him a few years and he will get a better job too.

Tulsa World was comparing this hire to that of Nolan Richardson 32 years ago.  I sure hope so, but I suspect Manning won't stick around very long if he has TU in the Sweet 16 in the next few years.

What will likely happen is that when Roy Williams steps aside at NC, you'll see who gets that job (Self).  Kansas will likely come calling Manning.

But, I think it's a good fit. And one that will likely put butts in the seats.

Kansas is a really plum job.  You think Self would bolt for NC?

Probably so. But I'm going to "live in the now" for now. Go TU. Fantastic news...

I thought the same thing. Isn't Self from Oklahoma? And why would you leave Kansas. You pretty much have the pick of the litter in a dozen odd states.

My secret hope is that eventually he will have more rings than fingers and decide to come back to OSU to slow down. Here's hoping!  ;D

No, that would never happen.

Self has no ties to Carolina. Self was a player at OSU and an assistant at Kansas and OSU. He is not part of Dean Smith's coaching tree and not part of the Carolina "family".

Roy Williams leaving was not a normal occurrence. That only happened because Dean pleaded with Williams to come back to save Carolina  after Matt Doherty drove UNC into the ground.

It's ironic because Dean himself is part of Phog Allen's coaching tree. He was a player and protégé of Allen at Kansas and actually played on KU's 1952 national championship team.

Manning is unlikely to ever coach at KU because he and Self are so close in age. Self was a graduate assistant under Larry Brown on KU's '86 Final Four team when Manning was a sophomore.

Good sign. You are correct....we are but a stepping stone. Didn't Danny talk to Tubby before he signed?

Are you kidding?  NC and Duke is to NCAAB what the Yanks and BoSox are to MLB.

I'd be surprised if he didn't bolt if given the chance.

KU has been one of the premiere programs for longer than I care to remember.  It's on the same level as Duke & NC, neither of those jobs would be considered a step up, just a lateral move, IMO.

Kansas Jayhawks
Tournament Appearances: 40
Final Fours: 13
Championships: 3 (1952, 1988, 2008)
Win-Loss: 88-39

Duke Blue Devils
Tournament Appearances: 35
Final Fours: 15
Championships: 4 (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010)
Win-Loss: 96-31

North Carolina Tar Heels
Tournament Appearances: 42
Final Fours: 18
Championships: 5 (1957, 1982, 1993, 2005, 2009)
Win-Loss: 105-40

Just for fun:

UCLA Bruins
Tournament Appearances: 44
Final Fours: 18
Championships: 11 (1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1995)
Win-Loss: 99-37

No, Danny was going to go to Carolina until Larry Brown hired his father, Ed,  as an assistant coach at KU. So Danny spent his senior year of high school at Lawrence High School and went to KU. It sounds worse than it is really was, Larry was an assistant coach under Dean at Carolina when Danny's father was a player there and later Ed played for the Carolina Cougars in the ABA  under Larry as the head coach. They had known each other for many years and were friends. Ed went with Larry to the NBA as one of Larry's assistants when Larry left KU.

After 9 lackluster years, I think most TU fans are ready to have a coach someone else wants to hire.

Thanks SWAKE, but I was reffering to Tubby disclosing his sentiments about our community to Danny. Never mind. ::)

Money talks....

What sentiments would that be? Why would he talk to Tubby anyway, his current boss worked at TU for a number of years. Why would he ring up some random former TU coach that he may, or may not, know?

You really think that Danny Manning is doing this for the money? He earned something like $60 million in the NBA not counting endorsements and has been making decent money since working for KU. Money isn't the driver for everything.

No, you are correct. Being an NBA star, Manning has all he needs....

Tubby found Tulsa to be....well, White Pride.

Really? Anything you can do to support that claim? And if that really was an issue for him he goes from TU to Georgia? And then to Kentucky? Really?

Why just Tubby, why not Nolan, or Steve Robinson?

No comment. What, you expect them to go public with their disenchantment? Yes, not Nolan....

So you have nothing but bong water as a reference.

You do also understand that Tubby left TU almost 20 years and six coaches ago?

Me neither. I just needed an excuse to bust out the industrial strength bong pic. It had been awhile.  ;D
