You must be younger than I thought. It happened here a lot in the '30s, and before. It even happens now from time to time. And Dicken's England. We have been SO lucky since WWII, we now have whole generations who cannot conceive of that kind of reality.

Still, it can't really be that widespread a practice. They'd probably drop off the grand parents first.
