Kansas tea party illustration draws racism claims
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A tea party group in Kansas says its depiction of President Barack Obama as a skunk is satire, not racism as the leader of a civil rights group alleges.
Hutchinson-based Patriot Freedom Alliance says on its website that like the president, the skunk is "half black, half white, and almost everything it does stinks."
The Hutchinson News reports local NAACP president Darrell Pope sees no humor in the depiction, which he calls a blatant statement of racism.
Local tea party supporter Chuck Sankey says former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has been the target of worse insults than what's on the website.
Patriot Freedom Alliance meets regularly and has hosted rallies in the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
This post is for guido. He claims that every action of any protestor near any Occupy website defines the entire movement. By his logic every member of the Tea party must now be racist.

Meh, honestly I don't know if it is really racist, though I can understand why it would be seen that way. He is, racially, half white and half black, and the comparing him to a skunk just makes a reference to that, but doesn't outright say that his racial profile has anything to do with his ability to do anything. However, even if they did not have the intent to make a racial slur, I can see it being implied by addressing race and then their low opinion of him, thus linking the two. Really toes the line, but in either case, it is a stupid move on their part.
would Norman Lear get away with this satire today?

you don't have to be a member of the Tea Potty to put one of these on your backside....
Before anyone complains that the pic may be p-shopped onto the car take note. There is a source for these bumper stickers online and they are being purchased.
On the bright side, you know that any racist smile you hear from someone with a bumper sticker like that on their car isn't the inadvertent kind. It's always nice when people are so clear about their inner thoughts.
I have found my candidate for President in 2012 ;D Especially since he promises a pony to everyone.
DB, quit breaking the rules, thread killer.
It appears the maker of the sticker slogan has cut and run rather than stand up with the power of his own convictions.

Don't worry. There's a market for this stuff, so it's nearly inevitable that someone will step in to fill it.
QuoteInge Marler, Arkansas Tea Party Leader, Makes Racist Joke At Event
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/14/inge-marler-tea-party-arkansas-leader-racist-joke_n_1597334.html?utm_hp_ref=politics
Tea Party leaders in Arkansas are on the defensive after a board member of a Tea Party group in the Ozarks made a racist joke at a rally over the weekend drawing laughs from the audience.
The Baxter Bulletin in north-central Arkansas reported that Inge Marler made the comments at the annual rally of the Ozark Tea Party. The remarks, which suggested that African-Americans are on welfare, were condemned by Tea Party leaders in the state. The Bulletin reported that the condemnation came after they contacted the Tea Party for comment.
The Bulletin reports that Marler, who told the newspaper she would stop using the joke, said the following as an ice-breaker in her speech:
"A black kid asks his mom, 'Mama, what's a democracy?'
"'Well, son, that be when white folks work every day so us po' folks can get all our benefits.'
"'But mama, don't the white folk get mad about that?'
"'They sho do, son. They sho do. And that's called racism.'"
Stay Classy Teaparty

No sense of humor, huh? C'mon people, lighten up a bit. Racism has become an overrused excuse for anything somebody doesn't agree with. To me, being a "n" is purely based on attitude, not race. It's no secret I don't support Obama, but the list of reasons does not include skin color. I find the creativity in the bumper sticker funny as he!!.
I imagine you would have the same reaction to the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia in Michigan. Jim Crow founded and runs the museum. Guess what? Jim Crow is black. Oh, the horrors!

I don't really find it that humorous. I think that bumper sticker is offensive.
I think it's more a reflection on Arkansas than any groups actual politics.
I also think that if you are looking for racism, you will certainly find it, and this is an excellent example of that.
What most people find distasteful is not that they are pointing out the president's skin color...its that the president's skin color is the reason they won't vote for him.
Obama PROS:
Can't think of any
He's a good talker
Obama CONS:
He's a good talker
he's a damn socialist
He's half black
Get it?
This stuff should have gone on during previous administrations when the man in charge was sending thousands off to be killed and mentally handicapped and physically dismembered. The righties are just plain belligerent and unpatriotic. Show some respect....this is the face of racism.

Are you really serious about that?
Have you really re-defined the 'n' word in your mind so that it is not about race??
Mrs C, humor and cleverness are two different things. This is a clever use of words but not really humorous. Having fun at the expense of others as a general rule is simply not humorous. When it is based entirely on race, like this bumper sticker, its racist. Ask some black folks whether they think this bumper sticker is humorous. I won't because I already know the answer.
This is not like lawyer jokes or dumb blond jokes.

I don't think that she has redefined the "N" word, it's just that "racist" and "hater" have become common place words used by so many in the blogosphere and in the news/infotainment/commentary media that it is becoming common place and almost fashionable to throw those words around. Look at all the talking heads left or right that use "racist" and "hater" on a daily basis, and even if they don't use those words directly, it's implied all the time. There are posters on this site that do it on a regular basis.

OK, I'll write it out so even
you can understand.
The implication that all blonde females are dumb/stupid is offensive.
She could color her hair to hide it but she would still actually be a blonde.

sheesh, I know all blondes are not dumb. So do both of my blonde sisters (one has a masters degree).

Blonde status, like lawyer status, can and often is obtained with money and can be changed at will or by others actions. Racial status is unavoidable by birth and lifelong. Surely there is a difference in the quality of offense committed.

Couple of my kids are "blue-eyed blond" Cherokees. Very intelligent. I like to try to confuse them with a bag of M & M's, though.....usually doesn't work, though.
(The blond M & M joke - how to confuse a blond? Have her alphabetize the M & M's.... the M's and the W's are usually pretty straight forward...but the 3's and the E's will trip them up every time!)

True blonde status is by birth. It's appearance can be faked. Are you telling me that my cousin (and others mentioned in this thread) should be required to conceal her true identity to avoid being treated as a stupid person? I might expect that from some here but I am truly surprised that you are/would be one.
Racial features can be altered too. Michael Jackson spent a lot of money, I sure, to alter his appearance.
Here is a rather famous case of a white man changing his appearance to pass as black:

Dude, at your age stretching like that can be dangerous! No way you compare racist bumper stickers with the angst a "real" blonde might feel over dumb blonde jokes. Perhaps you would feel better if a disclaimer were used noting "we're talking about those fake blondes like Jayne Mansfield".
Very thin stuff there Arrow.

We are about the same age. You are stretching a bit to say that dumb blonde jokes are harmless fun. Racist bumper stickers are not acceptable. Ridiculing someone for the color of their hair is also not acceptable. Before my hair turned grey, it was dark red, as opposed to carrot top red. I heard my fair share of Red Head jokes.
You added one too many comparisons (I think the lawyer comparison is legit.) and now cannot defend your choice.
