Title: I voted today!!!
Post by: Townsend on August 09, 2011, 03:06:20 PM
1:30 this afternoon.  I was number #11.

The bluehairs verifying ID's were looking at yearbooks to pass the time.

Why'd they not wait to combine this with something else?

I made it in at about 6:30 pm and I was number 4.  Almost didn't get to vote though because my Drivers License expired last week

What exactly was the election?  This was poorly promoted.

Aside from knowing this was a renewal of the ONG franchise, that article was a total waste of MB's time, IMO.  Go toss a ball with your kids Michael.  Sometimes it's more important to have some family time than to prove you are the resident Tulsa know-it-all.

QuoteIn the early part of 2010, a SNAFU involving ONG's transition to a new online bill pay system nearly got our gas cut off. Although I had had automatic bill pay in place via choicepay.com for several years, suddenly nothing was getting paid. ONG would run a computer tape once a month of what everyone owed, and send it to choicepay. Apparently the tape was being run after my previous bill was paid but before ONG charged the next month's bill to my account. At that moment in time, I had a zero balance, so the automated payment plan took $0 out of my account, which meant my bill wasn't getting paid.

I assumed choicepay's system was broken, and when I went to ONG's website, I found that ONG had a new auto bill pay system, hosted on their own website, so I signed up for it, again assuming choicepay had been discontinued. The next month, I was double-billed -- choicepay's system started working again, and ONG's auto pay kicked in. Highest gas bill of the year, and they hit my checking account twice. It took another two months to straighten everything out between choicepay and ONG.

I'd like to tell you that ONG was helpful and efficient in solving the problem, but in fact they were clueless and slow. I went through six months of lengthy phone calls to both companies and several erroneous cutoff notices, all because I assumed automatic bill pay would automatically pay my bill.

I like this part, does he not pay attention to what is going on with his bill pay site? That's why I have either used my banks bill pay or paid directly to the service. Tried a third party system for about three months and realised it doesen't work right.

I know everyone complains and moans about 'Skank' of America, but their billpay system is, simply put, awesome.  I've not once had an issue in the two years I've been back, plus the four years prior that I used them.  I know BOK had billpay, but it seemed incredibly kludgy.  Having e-bill initiated payments and having the bank inform you when the payment is processing via email is something I hated giving up when I switched to BOk.  I didn't necessarily like switching back, but BoA's billpay and account management website (and the Android/iPhone app) are simply awesome.  Sorry to use that adjective twice in a post.

Just try to close an account.  All of a sudden no one can help you and there are several forms that need to be signed and mailed and you have to go to another branch where they have an account closing specialist who will want to discuss your reasons for closing your account and then offer to give you all kinds of free perks and happy endings to keep your account open.  Took me a week to close a business account.

I didn't have that problem the first time.  And business accounts are always harder to close.  Personal accounts, not so much.

I use IBC.  I do all my bill pay through them manually and do my car payment and cash dumps on credit cards direct with the lender.  I don't like putting anything on auto-pilot, but I do enjoy not writing many checks anymore.

Expired DL should mean your driving privilege expired, not that you suddenly dont become the person on your DL.
Your driving status shouldnt affect the accuracy of a DL as ID.

You would think.  They really got confused when I handed them my CCW, which is a state issued ID as well.

Which law?   ...and would that mean you cant be in a bar if your DL is expired?  I know places like Wallgreens dont accept expired DL as ID, and will withhold prescriptions until you get renewed.
Not logical, and possibly even negligent if someone needs their medication immediately.

State question 746 that was voted in last November states the documents acceptable for proofing identity for voting must meat the following.
-the name of the person to whom it was issued
-a photograph of the person to whom it was issued
-an expiration date that is after the date of the election

As far as the prescriptions, I wonder what happens if they deny giving you your meds if you demand to have the script back so you can take it somewhere else.

Why would anyone go to a pharmacy or anywhere else without identification?

Who are these people who walk around with out ID of any kind?

I mean, I can understand if you lost your DL or had your wallet stolen, but is it that hard to carry some acceptable form of ID?

Why are people such obsequious bootlickers that they feel the need to constantly carry ID so they can prove their identity to some functionary? We had a big philisophical problem with the Soviets'  "papers please" mentality, yet here we are implementing the same in our own country and calling it freedom.

At least we're not Nevada, where it is now a crime to not produce a government-issued ID when asked for it by a LEO.

So if I go to the pharmacy and tell them I am Teatown, I should be able to pick up Teatown's methadone?

I'm trying to figure out what people are defending here.

What if I show up at a daycare and wish to pick up a child (not mine, but perhaps I need an extra one), should I have to show ID?

How about if I wish to cast my vote in an election, or cast a vote or two for some friends.  Should I have to present ID?

I mean, I'm a Libertarian and actually abhor the idea that so many functions of government require me to present identification, and give up certain liberties, but I am also a realist and understand that society requires me to carry positive identification for my own protection, and the protection of others.

I see extending that to the voting booth as a protection of my rights, rather than an infringement.

Besides, <I'm going to say it again>, this tiny group of people who do not carry any form of identification may indeed be inconvenienced.  This inconvenience is for the protection of the vast majority of people who do.

The biggest problem I have with this means you have to pay to vote, unless the government is willing to give out free IDs.  Not everyone drives, and therefore not everyone has a drivers license.  Or, in my case, I can't afford to get my license renewed right now (and avoid driving when I can).  While I don't have a problem with requiring people to have to prove who they are in certain situations (they better check ID when someone goes to withdraw money from my bank account... if I had any in there), but at the same time what I think most are worried about is things getting to the point where they can charge you with a crime for not having one.

The government does issue a free ID for voters: your voter registration card.

How very not-libertarian of you.

Conan, I thought you had to show photo ID now? The previous regime was that you had to show photo ID either when you first register or the first time you vote, but afterwards, a signature will do.

I carry both in case someone in authority in a long leather coat and monocle demand to see them.

The sign on the door did say "Photo ID or voter card".

I carry both in case someone in authority in a long leather coat and monocle demand to see them.
I think the one at mine just said ID, but didn't pay that much attention.  I'm just going by what the law says.  I didn't even think of showing my card, which I carry on me.
