Title: More Wars!
Post by: Gaspar on June 09, 2011, 01:40:22 PM
We are really getting serious with this war thing.  We've opened another front in Yemen led by the Pentagon's Joint Special Operations Command.  Teams of American military and intelligence operatives have been deployed to Sana, the Yemeni capital.

Friday's drone strike that killed Abu Ali al-Harithi was not a singular incident.  We continue to fly sorties, make drone attacks and launch missile strikes.

President Obama is not fooling around.  He's really taking it to em!

I'm losing count, are we up to 4 wars now?

I don't think any other president has ever fought 4 wars at once.

Could be 5 wars soon. . .Ya hear that Syria!

Maybe start bombing Acapulco.

Of all the enemies to public liberty, war is perhaps the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes; and armies, debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few ... No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare. – James Madison

Anyone have a great photoshopped photo or animation of him giving back that peace prize?

When historians sit down decades from now to address the events of the early 21st century, they will have no trouble explaining why Americans elected Barack Obama president. They elected him out of a firm conviction that the United States was not involved in enough wars.

War has been "company policy" for many decades...it is our most successful tool of "economic policy".

I wonder if it will ever end?

President Obama got Bin Laden, and now we pledge to hunt and kill his successor.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States will seek to hunt down and kill new Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri just as it did his predecessor Osama bin Laden, the top US military officer said Thursday.

"There is not a surprise from my perspective that he's moved into that position," Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told journalists after the Egyptian leader was named the new Al-Qaeda chief.

"He and his organization are still threatening us, and as we did both seek to capture and kill -- and succeed in killing -- bin Laden, we certainly will do the same thing with Zawahiri."

I thought the idea was to cut off the snake's head?

We have blossomed from two wars to 4 with a renewed push to stay on the aggressive.

Libya is expected to hit  $1.1 billion, with an additional $50 million spent on munitions by September.

The cost of the Iraq war is now $783 billion.

$1.1 billion on Libya sounds like a bargain. Obama must be using coupons.

It's the way the conservatives justify it.  I hate-hate-hated the Iraq war.  Bush would have been the one celebrating his takedown of OBL had he not put us (our brave men and women in uniform that represent the US) in that position.

That was my response to the line of thinking on federal waste in Washington.  "But it's only a billion" as if that's an insignificant amount of money.  Wait, I guess it is when you have an open checkbook and zero responsibility for the money.

A billion dollars is walkin-around money for this administration.  President Obama's checks have twelve zeros not nine.

Conan, folks that use expressions like "only a billion" have no concept of what that amount really represents. After all, when they pay only a few dimes a year in federal income tax, assuming they pay at all, it's not their money being wasted on whatever.

I wasn't calling anyone out on this one actually. I just wish people would understand that our government needs to be accountable whenever it spends taxpayer money--no matter what the amount. If people here hold the opinion that American wasted $700+B on Iraq, or it wasted close to that amount in stimulus, or it is wasting by comparison a paltry $1.1B in Libya, then let them.

Don't forget the $1.2 trillion to bail out the banks and insurance companies.  Even more than the nearly 1 trillion caused by the collapse of the Savings and Loans.

Hey, a trillion here and a trillion there and you are talking about real Republicontin excesses!

I actually support Obama on this and give him credit for going after those sons-of-b..ches. I think it is also well within his rights as President to do so.

I was doubtful at first, mainly because of the way Bush was treated by the left over warmongering. Hey, I was wrong.

Interesting news. . .The LA Times is now reporting that the administration is urging Iraqi officials to request that troops remain in Iraq rather than withdrawing according to the 2012 deadline "amid growing concern that the planned pullout of virtually all remaining American forces would lead to intensified militant attacks."

"Unless Iraq asks for a change in its 2008 agreement with the George W. Bush administration, only about 200 active-duty troops would remain as advisors after December, the officials said. More than 166,000 American troops were in Iraq in 2007 when the U.S. military presence there peaked. There are about 46,000 remaining."

If Iraqi's follow the administration's advice, as many as 10,000 troops will remain.

Probably not a bad idea if withdraw will create instability, but it is ironic that Bush's plans for troop withdraw are being "adjusted" in such a manner.
