When you get 20 minutes, read this blog post.  A well-thought-out meditation on the intersections of American economy, political tradition, and societal organization, from the Jeffersonian family farm to the industrial city to the suburban ideal and onwards into the future.  Can't recommend this enough.

I used to have a professor at TU who had a term for this. 

He would refer to this as "Tantric Masturbation."   I.E. The message is quite simple but the writer wants to make it last as loooong as possible.
