It has been years since I went out to their event. I really enjoyed it, and at the time I thought there was no way that I was going to get my 5 dollar taster kit worth of food when I started walking to each vendor and getting these(at the time)little slivers of BBQ put on my plate.
By the time I walked through all the vendors I was stuffed.
I am glad that it has turned into a big event for them.
The music line up does look very impressive.

It's huge now, and very well run.  The best thing about having a festival run by a group like Rotary is that they meet often and discuss responsibilities in making the event a success.  Other groups may only meet on a monthly basis leading up to the event and not even discuss it for most of the year.  This makes organization a last minute rush.

Jack and the guys at Bixby Rotary really know how to put on an event!

Almost 100 teams this year!  That makes this the largest BBQ Comp in Oklahoma.

If you can't get something good to eat here, you don't like BBQ!

We will of course be tweeting our secrets @3guyssmokin and adding regular facebook updates of each dish we turn in http://www.facebook.com/pages/3-Guys-Smokin/161365000557515?ref=ts

Please come join us and say hi, or follow us during the evening of the 6th and day of the 7th as we progress.  You can buy a taster kit on the 7th and start eating at 11:30.  We set up People's choice dishes to come out moments after the competition dish goes to the judges, so you get to taste exactly what the judges are eating.

Do you have a map or know where you will be located yet?  I am guessing you have a sign.  Am looking forward to trying your cooking.

I just finished designing a new sign yesterday.

Lawry's is the key to many things good!!

Gaspar,
What in the world ever made you think I am a liberal????

Well, I am not.  An extreme moderate perhaps, but lib, no.  I also have friends who make everyone on this board look like RWRE.  Even the most liberal of us (TeaTown...).  Yes,...it is true!  I just don't put up with the lies and nonsense from either side.  Recently,...here...in the US, there has been much more of it effectively distributed by the RWRE.  Decades ago, it was from the LWRE.  I have always been stuck in the middle with...well, often, kind of by myself.

But not me - no lib here.  I ain't no stinkin' commy pinko fa....  oh, wait, I can't say that can I?

If you don't believe me, just wait until someone seriously tries to advance gun control.  What I have to say about Murdochian RWRE extremist Bullsh** is baby-talk-to-my-grandchildren.

I agree. I am kind of an event groupie. If there is a corn dog and live music nearby, I am there. This is a very well run event.

Festival was a good time.  Had limited time to play, but was a lot of fun for a couple hours!

Well, Gaspar, I finally got to see what it is all about.  Not sure which sauce the booth was using, but it was pretty good.  (Still have the bottle of Razzy I haven't had time to use; maybe this week.)  The brisket inside the crust was juicy, tender and tasty.  I got a piece that was one of those "bad hair day" barks on the outside, but when I got inside, it was good!  Like the cherry cobbler a lot, too!  There was a guy standing about 3 or 4 people behind me with a Marshall's T-shirt, so I was wondering if he was the Marshall's fan who posts here.  Only T-shirt like that I have seen yet.  Didn't try to say hi, 'cause you all looked busy.  And there were knives!

There were 3 booths that all were very close and I enjoyed quite a bit.  Yours, Big Daddy's, and "something Mesquiter's" - can't remember which.  Jakes was pretty good (better in the store) but that doesn't count, 'cause they do it for a living.  Could have gone in any direction until I found my tie-breaker.  Goes to the basic premise that for really great bbq, you gotta find an old Black man.  Big Anthony's.  Pretty close, overall between.

Here are some results, not sure who/what/when this is - there are no People's Choice results;

http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=106029

I noticed Rib Crib was up off the bottom in some categories.  Just goes to show how...well, it's not important...wouldn't make any difference anyway.

Obviously I didn't agree with ANY of the judges in any category.  The one's I mentioned should all have been in top 10 to 15.  Overall, though, with the exception of just a few - and I truly am sorry to those whose toes I am getting ready to step on - keep the day job!  And people, LOSE the Ranch Style beans - they always taste like - and probably are - from a can!!  Come on, now!  If you can't come up with your own, then leave the beans at home!  And a little bit of anything one throws in on them can not cover the taste of Ranch Style beans!  (Not that I don't enjoy them at home, I do, but not in this context!)

To disparage only a little, the judges would probably have put this in the middle of the pack, too.  (We need this restaurant here to show all the others how it should be done.)

We got 2nd in people's choice, but had some serious exicution problems with our comp meats.  We were trying to cook too many briskets, and everything suffered from that. 9 briskets had a negative impact on our fuel and timing :(.

I think the results were spot on!  Donny Teel knows how to compete and I have tasted his stuff.  We had several failures in execution that caused us to be middle of the pack.  The event was a success and that's what we are always most happy about.

10 years ago, Bixby Rotary came to us and asked if we could help them set up a "cookoff" on a little picnic ground by the Arkansas River to raise money for Bixby Schools. . .

When we participate in this, it's like watching a child grow up. :'( (tears of joy!)

Heironymous, if it was a grey Marshall's shirt and it was waiting in line for the tasting to start at the 3GS tent, that was myself and the lovely FMC.  We enjoyed the event.

Not sure if what was handed out for people's choice was the same as what was judged but there are some I saw up there on the official results which I thought was pure dog food and some I liked which was near the bottom.  As well, not all the team names were that memorable, we had a short list with team numbers we were keeping track of.

We had a good time, sampled some good, decent, and awful cue, but had a great time doing it.  FMC is trying to con me into starting to do competitions but it looks like an expensive hobby to me.  I can nail it on a small scale, but really not sure how it would translate if I had to do several briskets, shoulders, ribs, etc. like Gaspar alluded to.  We also got in a nice 100 mile ride on the motorcycle just meandering around Tulsa, Creek, and Osage counties afterward.  It was a great day for a festival and motorcycle ride.

You guys all need to take the Judges Certification class that Bixby Rotary holds every year and then volunteer to be a judge in the tent to understand what the judges are looking for.

Buffalo BBQ - Donny Teel from Sperry - is a great competitor and has a great bbq joint you can drive to in Sperry for lunch.   He is the guy who was Grand Champion.  And he competes every weekend somewhere.

The judges have no idea of who they are judging and the teams have no idea of which judges will be judging their entries.   The rules for KCBS are a lot stricter  than MIM or ICBA.

Grey shirt, goatee.  Tall, skinny guy.  Probably you, then.  I was old guy probably 4 or 5 ahead.  Had my surfboard shirt on.

The event was a lot of fun.  Beautiful day, lots of good background music, some live I think, lot's of radio.  Great event Gaspar!

Buffalo, huh?  Sperry.  Guess I will have to go up there and check it out for real - I thought I tried them at the event, but now not so sure.  Looks like just the kind of place I love - trailer in a parking lot, next to the Daylight Donuts!  Best places in the world!

Motorcycle ride sounds good!  Must get mine running again.  Not that many shovelheads around these days, so maybe can draw some attention.

Judging is fun and you learn a lot about what is expected.  Bixby is always looking for good judges, so it Art of BBQ.  It is in September again this year and I will make sure to post a call for judges as soon as we start getting teams and judges registered.

That would be a great one for you to judge!

Gaspar. A buddy of mine here at work would have liked to got involved with the BBQ festival in Bixby. What all does it take to get started competing in these local events ? He makes great BBQ and would really enjoy competing.
Is it just a pride thing or is there money and prizes also ?

Oh!! Yes there is money.  To compete in most of these local comps, all you need is a good team name and an idea of what you're doing.  There are several online resources that can help you out with figuring out your timing.  One good resource is The Smoke Ring http://www.thesmokering.com/ it's kinda like TNF for BBQers.

Bixby had a total cash purse of $12,000.  Many of the guys in these big rigs you saw there just travel from town to town competing and making enough money to pay for their lifestyle.

The best way to learn how without making a big investment in failure is to go to one of the comps and hang out with one of the teams on Friday night.  Share a beer or two and we are likely to tell you anything.  The more beer, the less we lie.  But seriously, we love people to come hang out and ask us questions.  We had one guy that everyone on this forum likely knows who hung with us until 3:30am on Friday asking every question in the book, from timing meat to wood choice to injection techniques.  We're a friendly bunch!

There are about a dozen teams that we regularly compete against, and in many cases loose to, who started as guys that hung out at our tent or came to our classes.

I will be posting information soon on the Tulsa Art of BBQ.  Anyone interested in becoming a judge will be able to sign up in the next week or two.  If you are interested in becoming a Certified BBQ Judge you can visit this link:

http://www.kcbs.us/classes.php

Most competitions have a certain # of certified judges and the rest of the judging seats are open to the public.  They will train you on the basics prior to the event.

If your really interested there is a competition coming up this weekend at the racetrack in Claremore.    Here is the info from the Claremore Revellie Rotary  http://www.claremorereveille.com/2011%20RD_TriFold%20Final%20rev040111.pdf (http://www.claremorereveille.com/2011%20RD_TriFold%20Final%20rev040111.pdf)

It is fun, not as big as Bixby and if you need further fun things to do there is always the casino.   I don't know if the horses will be running.

There will be around 75 judges this year for the Tulsa Art of BBQ.  You may apply now!

www.tulsaartofbbq.com

KCBS requires a certain # of certified judges, so if you are not certified please apply early for the best chance at getting a judges seat.

The judges at this event are really treated like royalty by the Drillers staff, inside of the Driller's facility. . . far better than sitting in a hot dusty tent like most BBQ competitions.

Good luck!

Tom's 68th & Peoria and on 15th St. right by the coffee shop.  Great mechanics and Tom is an all around nice guy.

T-Town 71st between Riverside & Lewis on the south side of the road, their sister store is 27th & Harvard, Mid-Town bicycles, that's the old Venable's location.  They have some of the best mechanics in Tulsa as well.

Bicycles of Tulsa 57th & Mingo East side of the road

Lee's 2nd & Frankfort, their sister store is the Trek store at 98th & Riverside.

Superleggera 11th St. across from Home Depot in the old liquor store, high end road and mountain bike. These guys are true enthusiasts and geared more toward the racer crowd.

918 XC in the same center as Charlestons on Brookside, more mountain bike and cyclocross-oriented but they sell and work on road bikes too.  I just bought a new mountain bike from them.

360 Sports in Owasso (not sure the exact location)

There's also a guy in Claremore who advertises reconditioned bikes on Craigslist, but can't remember the shop name right now.

If you are in Norman any time soon, BikeOne just off Main is a great shop, they are also the primary sponsor of the team I race for.  PM me and I can put you in touch with the right person there if you need a deal on anything.

Those are the one's I can think of at the moment.  I know people at all the shops other than 360 and the one in Claremore.  At last count, someone told me the Tulsa area had something like 18 shops which is a lot for a market our size.  I'm not sure if that's true or not.

Thanks a lot!  Lee's is the only one that rings a bell!  Venables - any connection to Mid-Town?  Or different people?  Lot's of changes!

I think I have been to BikeOne (last summer).  I spend some time in Moore/Norman area and try to go to some places of interest when time allows.  Couple of bike shops I have been to, but don't remember the names.  Main street sounds familiar.
