Title: anyone recommend a dependable and affordable tax person
Post by: TUalum0982 on February 12, 2011, 11:09:15 AM
I have always used turbo tax to file our taxes.  However, this year, it says we owe the state about 1600 in income taxes.  We have never ever ever owed anywhere near that amount.  I have double checked all my numbers, deleting said file, and starting all over from scratch only to arrive at the same numbers.

Can anyone recommend a person who can sit down with us, answer our questions and do our taxes that wont empty out my bank account? I refuse to go to HR Block or Jackson Hewitt. Something about setting up shop in Walmart isnt appealing to me.

I found Roman tax service on 16th and memorial who advertises 59 flat rate.  Any reviews?

Thanks in advance.

Owe $1600 as in above your withholding?

Check your withholding compared to last year.

well my wife worked a part time job earning about 6200 dollars, only paying 13 dollars in state income tax, however the federal witholding was correct.  My understanding is the tax rate is 5.5 percent on any income over 8500.  So 5.5% of 6200 should be about 330 dollars correct, not 1600.

You may have been hit for underpayment penalties.  There may also be some interaction with your Federal Tax.  My only other suggestion would be to carefully compare this year to last year.  My taxes are usually simple; single, no dependents, standard deduction.  More like how much did you make, send it in.

Good Luck.

Double check that you're entering everything correctly. Every year I miss something and TaxACT says I owe a thousand bucks to the feds or hundreds of dollars to the state until I fix it. It doesn't help that I pay taxes in more than one state, so I have to be sure and get credit on my Oklahoma tax for what I pay to other states. One year it said I owed Missouri some ridiculous amount because I accidentally ticked the "part-time resident" box instead of the "nonresident" box.

Also, have Turbotax spit out the actual form, and you'll probably spot the error much more quickly. That's state income tax on $29,000 it wants you to pay.
