Title: Not Tulsa, but Development in Tulsa Suburb
Post by: Johnboy976 on November 15, 2010, 09:50:24 AM
Glenpool seems to be making advancements. It's a small step forward, but at least it's something.

I would wager that Glenpool will do very well with this event center. The city has strong leadership and has been able to attract many restaurants to surround the development anchored by Wal-Mart. This has easy access and real visibility and is multi-purpose.

This ain't the Glenpool of the 1990's and before.

Looks like they hired the same architect as Broken Arrow for their new center.
Derivative and unimaginative.

Still beats the "Crashship" by a mile!

All the little towns around are booming.  Everybody is bailing out of Tulsa.  Gee, I wonder why?

I saw the Glenpool Mayor, Vice Mayor and City Manager today at our TulsaNow lunch.

They said that the facility should be open by February and they already had good interest in rentals. I wanted to do a company Christmas party there and will have to wait until next year.

Oh puleeeze.  There is as much new construction going on of all sorts in Tulsa (hotels, apartments, homes and condos, retail, business, hospital, entertainment, etc. ) as all our suburbs combined.

Yep, that's why the 'Crashship' has been making a profit for three straight years now, when most public houses lose money.

Yep, wished we'd have never built that..

Crashship - comment was for the looks of the thing.  Just ugly.

Yep, lots of building in Tulsa.  Conjecture;  I bet Owasso, Jenks, Broken Arrow (and now Glenpool??) combined outdo Tulsa by quite a bit.  Tulsa still what? about 390,000 or so.  While Owasso went from 8,000 to 30,000 in last 25 years or so.  BA went from about 20,000 to 90,000.  Jenks, who knows...10,000 to 400,000?

Tulsa county is almost 600,000 and that is with Tulsa city staying fairly stagnant, or at least slow growing.

What I can't figure out is why people are getting so crazy about building so many new houses when there is such a large inventory of existing houses?  I think - personal opinion moment alert - that it is the efforts of the tax (property) authorities, home builder associations, and realtor associations all promoting the same ideal - the one that says volume (quantity) is better than quality.  Quantity = big space box houses - McMansions.

Great rooms?  Really??

That's subjective.  I think it's a work of art.  As will many others.  I doubt very seriously you've been as many times to it as I have (around 75 times since she's opened).  I photographed her from concrete pad pouring to ribbon-breaking.  I see a marvelous, iconic design.  I'm guessing you'd rather have something along the lines of the Ford Center (as she opened).  Boring.

I'll take the Crashship anyday over that community college wannabee of a convention center. Seriously - it looks like the Glenpool branch of TCC.

To each their own. However, I would say that your opinion doesn't extend to too many visitors. The ones I know REALLY like that "crapship" design.

I guess I am just too old fashioned.  It IS art.  "Modern" art??

Another personal opinion moment - I prefer the designs with a little character to them.  The old pavilion building on the fairgrounds.  Mayo Hotel.  Atlas building.  Senior moment - one with the 'green' lights on top - kind of a pyramid shape.  Boston Ave Methodist.  Christ Scientist Church downtown.  First Methodist.  Anything that required a little more thought that just copying what was done in "The Day the Earth Stood Still".  Many others downtown.  Even the old Veteran's Bar - now renamed "Blue Dome".

Clatu Gort Barada Nictu!

The one with the green top is the mid-continent/kosdin(sp?) building.  Copper top.  The joke was that is where the energizer bunny would stop to rest at.

Sounds good to me.  There are many very fine examples of real design downtown.  I MAYBE could even appreciate the Williams Center, even though it is rather plain.  Maximally Minimalist??
