Petroleum Club may move to new space

The Petroleum Club is considering a move out of the downtown Tulsa building that bears its name.
In a letter to the social club's members earlier this month, President Gerald McLaughlin indicated the board of directors is ready to explore the option.
"After over two years of evaluation, negotiations and study, your Board has approved and recommended that it may be in the best interest of our Club to relocate the Club's facilities to another location in the Tulsa Downtown area," the letter stated.
McLaughlin wrote that a decision is "imminent," although potential locations have not been selected.
To proceed with the plan, the board has called special meetings at the Petroleum Club Building, 601 S. Main St., at 5 p.m. Sept. 15 and noon Sept. 16 for membership to vote on amendments to the club's bylaws.
The amendments would end a prohibition on amending the bylaws to allow indebtedness and allow the club to incur debt greater than $10,000 for the purposes of bettering the club.
Marcel Berlioux, general manager of the Petroleum Club, said he could not provide more information than what was in the letter before the vote.
The club plans to auction off unused furniture and furnishings Sept. 16, Berlioux said.
Founded in 1951, the Petroleum Club originally met at the Gem theater at 618 S. Main St. before moving into the top three floors of the Petroleum Club Building shortly after it was constructed in 1963.
Arson destroyed the Petroleum Club's facilities in early 1994, but after a $6 million reconstruction, the club was able to
return to the top of the building by the end of the year.
The Petroleum Club occupies the uppermost two floors of the building, which is owned by Kanbar Properties.
The club has 950 members, Berlioux said.

Call me crazy... but I'm pretty sure both the Tulsa World and the Petroleum Club are just blocks away from each other on Boulder.

Interesting. Sounds like it's more than a "may" if they're auctioning off furniture. The big question is, where will they go?
If only there were a building in downtown Tulsa suitable for putting some type of club in.

From the article that you quoted in the begining. One could make that connection, but I would think that would be hard to keep under wraps.
And will the First Baptist Church across the stree stop them from serving alchohol?

That was my first thought. If the P Club can raise the money to acquire and restore the Tulsa Club building it could close the gap between it and the Summit Club. Unfortunately, I fear the P Club's move may be one of downsizing.

I believe rules are different for places that serve alcohol and places that PRIMARILY serve alcohol
Also, I think FBC is technically across two streets.

The rules are probably different for private clubs anyway
This will end the "logistical nightmare", that is the kitchen at the Petroleum Club.
Think I will see if I can't find the number of a friend that knows Marcel.

Frogs are so tight lipped.... except when it comes to a pretty woman.
It was only a matter of time, mismanagement, partnerships with country clubs that made no sense at all and other "not thinking outside the box" moments at the club has led to this.
The Summit Club across the street is the premier club in Tulsa with membership at an all time high, state of the art penthouse for members and lunch daily with a great management staff. Sorry to see the petro club going but rumor had been going around about this for months its just a worn out club that was remodeled badly and has zero drive from the "management".
On another note I have attended many social events in OKC at the Petro club there, it is one of the worst run clubs in the country, again all about the management.
I missed this last week, but the P Club announced it is moving to First Place Tower. I did not realize the top floor of this building was empty banquet space. I would have loved to see them take over the Tulsa Club building, but that project/expense was probably way too big for its membership.

"Kanbar Properties has also signed an agreement with The Petroleum Club of Tulsa that will allow it to move from its current space in The Petroleum Club Building to the 41st floor of the First Place Tower. That floor will be completely renovated and ready to open next spring or summer."

It used to be called "The Top of The First"
Really cool views and a nice workable banquet kitchen.
Back then it was the "ole boys club", lunch hang out.
Petroleum Club is getting a "Choice" location.
So I guess that this isn't going to happen?

The attempted to raise $2.5mm and were quite unsuccessful. When they found the fundraising to be so tough they decided to take a look at the structure of the club. The entire management team was fired and they entered a management agreement with Post Oak Lodge. POL is providing general management along with financial management. They hired a chef from Nonna's in OKC and have contracted with a sommelier from the Broadmoor in Colorado to assist in training staff and developing the wine list.

They should move out to Post Oak. That's a great facility.
Sounds like a private club in search of a purpose to exist.
