Are they masters of creating demand for products which did not exist before, or what? I've suspected some of the shenanigans like an Apple employee "leaving" his iPhone 4 at the bar were well-placed publicity stunts to help create demand.
After over 600,000 units were ordered yesterday, AT&T has cut off orders until they can get more inventory. Another winner for Apple customers and share-holders.

crap...my upgrade eligibility date is tomorrow...I wonder what kind of price break you get on the 3GS now that the 4 is in pre-order...wait a minute...LOL.
You can order them directly from Apple.com (Although, they have a delayed shipping date). Ordered one of them this morning for my father. He has a shipping date of 07/02. I have decided to hold off for myself with the ever changing world of Android and not too mention Windows 7 phone on the way. But I am certainly ready for something new after carrying around the 3G for a couple of years.

All upgrade dates in 2010 were moved up if you were ordering the iPhone.
iPhone 3gs is $99 w/ 2yr contract.

Not me, I specifically asked them and they would NOT move me up. No late pays, nothing. I'm on auto bill-pay with them. I'm getting online tonight at midnight, by golly!

I've given a lot of thought about this over the years, and I think the pent-up demand is simply because Apple makes awesome products. And I don't use the word "awesome" frivolously.
When the first iPhone was introduced, it immediately rendered all other cellphones obsolete and made those companies look like Luddites. It was so far ahead of its time that years later, only one model -- the Android -- seems capable of actually competing.
The success of the iPhone isn't a fluke. Look at the other successes Apple has rolled out in recent years. OS-10 is damned near bulletproof as an operating system. iTunes transformed the digital music industry. iPod was the first really good Mp3 player, and still is. And I suspect iPad is going to revolutionize the portable computer industry as well.
And I speak as no Apple fanboy. I still type on PCs at work and at home. But I've tinkered with plenty of Apple products as well and, believe me, company's success is miles from being just hype. And, yes, I may just switch in a few years.
I'm hearing reports from multiple places that response for the iPhone 4 is 3-4 times that of previous models. I'm a longtime gadget nerd and keep up with all the latest in iPhones, Android, WebOs, Kin, etc. but I'm very surprised by this level of response. I've been running the new OS which launches next week for awhile now and it's definitely an improvement. It'll be interesting to get my hands on the new hardware as well.

report out earlier today that some orders which stated would arrive on 07/02 were actually pushed back until 07/14. I would say that 30-40% of my calls are dropped. It truly awful. I miss Verizon if only for the better coverage.
If only at&t offered a true, un-crippled Android phone, the iPhone would have a run for it's money.
Stripping an Android of all it's open source abilities and replacing it with crapware is apparently at&t's way of hanging on to it's fading Apple business model a little longer.

The 4 has an antenna wrapped around it under the metal edge. It's supposed to help significantly.
30 - 40% would tweak me.
The amount I use my phone to talk though... that would be about 4 dropped calls a month.

30-40% is probably due to such a large percentage of my calls being between iPhones, so my personal drop rate might be somewhere around half that. Plus my coverage in my office is horrible because I am in the middle of a very large building. I may show 3-4 bars sitting at my desk, but that's a sham, probably 75% of my calls in my office are dropped.

Now thats funny. That is my boss to the tee. He is so wrapped up with his electronic toys, he is first in line at all the releases. New iPad. Had to have it ! New 3GiPad. Holy crap ! gotta run and get it. New Droid. Oh snap ! better get it.
Never seen anyone like that. But as the cartoon shows, he must not be alone. Makes no sense to me.
I had US Cellular for 3 years and the kid that I was talking to when I went to upgrade. Totally blew the deal buy not really offering me anything that was to my liking. So I was talked into the iPhone by guess who ? my boss. 3 months ago I just got the 3G because at the time 100 dollars beat 200 for the at the time 3GS.
In that time I have found out that US Cellular service as far as dropped calls far beats AT&T service. Dont know why but it does. And not being the game playing app adding nut most all of AT&T customers are, I feel I traded down while paying up.

It is largely the phone. at&t's network isn't quite what it used to be (I do occasionally drop calls now, while two years ago it was actually surprising), thanks to all the new iPhones people have bought in the last couple of years, but I still find that my Nokias work far better than my SO's old Sony Ericsson.
at&t has this inexplicable habit of selling phones that have awful reception. It makes them look bad, so I don't know why they insist on doing that.
CDMA phones almost all use the same chipset and there's much less variation in antenna design (most of them have all the RF work done by Qualcomm and use one of Qualcomm's chipsets), so you don't see most of the low end phones causing trouble.

This is interesting to hear. I travel extensively between Tulsa and OKC on a weekly basis now and ride out in the country quite a bit on my road bike both places and I don't seem to have any worse reception issues than I ever did with one of my previous phones whether I'm in the city, on the turnpike or out in the country. There's a dead spot in the middle of my office, but that's been the case for six years.

My company has been using AT&T and it's predecessors since before I came on board in Oct. '04, I'm pretty sure. Well, wait, we might have been on USC then changed to Cingular (AT&T). Too many Marshalls since then.
I rarely talk on my iPhone but I use it for everything else. Can't wait for the new model to come out. I have read that Apple is working on making the iPhone replace your keys and wallet. Soon you will be able unlock your front door, start your car, and pay for groceries all from the iPhone. Better not flush it down the toilet.

Most any phone will work reasonably well if the signal is good. It's only in the truly marginal situations that a better one makes a big difference. I used to live in what, for almost everyone, was a dead spot on at&t (Cingular, at the time). It always amazed me that I'd be able to make a call and even get reasonable data speeds while their phones were saying "no service."
I was exaggerating somewhat when I said the iPhone's reception is like a freebie LG. It's better than that, it's just not top notch, which is sad since everything else about the last couple have been top notch hardware-wise. I haven't used a 3GS, which supposedly brought some improvement over the 3G, but the 3G was just fair to middling. It was about on par with an older Nokia I once had that I thought didn't have great reception but still worked where I was living at the time.
If you're on at&t, and you want a backup phone, buy whatever cheapie Nokia candybar they're selling. Aside from a rare few, they have the best reception available in a handheld GSM phone. If you really want an emergency phone, find a GSM bag phone with both 850 and 1900MHz. Needless to say, a long whip is better even than the crazy antennas they use in the new handhelds.
I rarely talk on the cell phone, either. Too bad you can't buy an iPhone for a reasonable price without a voice plan.
That alone has pushed me to Sprint, where I can get a $30/month unlimited data/text plan that costs like 20cents a minute for the rare instances I need to make a voice call. The whole cell phone pricing schemes are pretty ridiculous, especially when you look at one of those studies that examines how much the average user is really paying per minute. The cheapest iPhone plan is like $70/month, isn't it?

I think with the right apps, you can do all of that (provided it has an rf transmitter). Just a little bit more and the iphones will start writting their own apps and take over the world.
I still haven't found a reason to stop using cricket. For the amount of time I spend on the phone, I would be spending a lot more through one of the other companies, and I get unlimited text (I am at about 1000 of those a month, down a bit since I stopped skirt chasing) and unlimited data for web, email and pic text. If I went out of market more (I was really surprised how big the market was last time I looked, they have one hell of a "map" now), I could see changing carriers, however I never exceed my 100 minutes of roaming so I really don't see the point. And to add to it, my dropped call rate is less then 5%. However, one of these days I really need to get around to hacking a better phone to work on cricket, though my current blackberryisc motorola is great.

I was seeing that about the backup on a blog post entered today. They had several people upgrade theirs; the consensus update time ranged from 20 minutes to an hour.
I suspect it hung because I did the update from my work laptop and I don't keep media files on my work laptop, that's all synced by my personal laptop. I have issues here and there from syncing one phone to two different laptops.

I've been looking at the specs of the iPhone 4 and I have to say that it's actually got top of the line hardware in it. The first iPhone was miles behind nearly every other smartphone out there hardware-wise. The 3G was merely outdated before it was released. The 3GS hardware was only slightly behind other high-end smartphones. The iPhone 4, by contrast, equals or exceeds every other smartphone in nearly every hardware specification.
The camera is a little behind state of the art, but it's the only thing that falls short.
Between that and making the software useful with 3 and now the improvements in 4, the iPhone is pretty much all there. No longer is it half-baked with respect to software features.
Congrats, Apple. Now please stop with the App Store BS so I can buy one. ;D

Don't feel bad, I thought I bricked mine tonight when it popped up an error after extracting the update and trying to send the file to the phone. The front panel just had a picture of the cable and said 'iTunes'. I restarted iTunes (which by the way, i HATE) and it squawked about finding a phone in recovery mode. Good thing I synced the phone earlier this morning. Restored the last sync and all was well.

My problem isn't with the App Store per se, it's with their policy that I can't put whatever software I like on hardware I own, like I can with every other smartphone in existence.
Not that the approval process has been fixed at all, despite their claims. They're as arbitrary as ever, and have some asinine requirements.

When apps come out that support iOS4, you'll notice the ability to multitask with them. Also, they made the mail interface different, by having a unified inbox for those that use more than one mail account.
Also, my brother said the ability to change the background image, but I haven't found where to change that yet.

#1 problem with backup failure is app backup issues. Once you buy an app, you can re-download it for free so just delete them off your phone, let it back up, then reinstall.

We can go to lunch one day over on the east side. I'll show ya. I've only had mine now four days and am pretty proficient with it. But that's because I didn't get mine online. Purchased it from the store at 31st and Garnett and the gentleman I bought it from spent 30 minutes showing me some neat little tricks. Sometimes buying online isn't always the best way.
I have been in line on launch day at the apple store to get each iPhone. You could say I've had a little experience with the device.
Received my new iphone 4 this morning via fedex!! Delivered about 845AM!
Went to the apple store at 10 to see if they would have any cases out, they of course did not, so I asked an employee....he told me in a rude manner "no, cases will not be available till tomorrow, the phone doesnt come out until tomorrow you know." I said "except for me, and a few others, look..." and showed him the box. Wasnt trying to show off, but rather just show him up. He was rather rude and smug.
So I went outside the apple store and low and behold there is a ZAGG invisible shield kiosk there. I asked him how much it would be for a front and back cover including sides, he told me 40 bucks. I said lets do it. It took about an hour or so but he did it perfectly and only charged me 30 since it took so long since that was his first time on an iphone 4. He said tomorrow he will only be doing the fronts and backs, not sides since it takes so long. He said he had 400 front covers and said he would have 3 additional installers there waiting tomorrow.

So far I've been pretty pleased with the 3GS; it does more than I would ever think that it would need to and the photos it takes are a damn sight better than my old Sony w580i. Can't beat the price either. I just couldn't fathom waiting so long for something new. Plus, if I decide I don't like the 3GS, I can return it within 30 days. I might or might not get the 4.

Meh. I've got a DSLR, so a cameraphone is not really a necessity for me. But this one does take pretty decent pictures in good lighting.

So do I, but I find it inconvenient to lug it around everywhere I go. It's nice to be able to snap a good pic and instantly upload it to Facebook, Flickr, or whatever. I could muck around with my phone and make it work in USB host mode and do that with pics from my DSLR, but it would take more work.
Certainly if I expect to be taking pictures, I'll take the DSLR though. The low light performance is just so much better, even on my ancient model. I wouldn't be surprised if my next phone takes better pictures than my SLR, though. (look at some Nokia N86 8MP or N8 samples, it's ridiculous how good they are) That'll be a sad day. Good lenses are good.
I'm hoping Nokia's MeeGo phone has the N8's relatively humongous sensor and Xenon flash. Despite the extra pixels involved in going to 12MP, the larger sensor allows the photosites to still be larger than any camera phone thus far.

I bought an Otter Box before I left the store with my new iPhone last year. My daughters had both broken screens before so I knew the cost of those repairs (yes they had to pay out of their own pocket for that) and I've got to say that $50 investment has saved me hundreds. I'm very hard on phones and I can't tell you how many times mine has been dropped or inadvertently gotten wet. Everyone else I know who has an Otter Box has been just as pleased.
The only downside is you have to make sure you get the correct car charger to fit and it will not fit in a docking station in the case.

My brother has an otter box defender (I just purchased one as well and am awaiting the shipping on it) that he wasn't real impressed with. It protects the phone, but he complained of it falling out of the clip on a regular basis. He emailed them; they evidently had enough complaints on this that they redesigned the clip and sent him a brand new case with clip. That's how you keep in business, by keeping current customers happy.
Got mine on Amazon for 20 dollars!
My boss just left to head to the mall to meet up with his Wife that is standing in that huge line(and she reserved one)
What makes these people do this ?
Good lord, I can get the same thing 6 to 7 months from now with ease. Who cares if you have it first. I guess Im getting to old to care.

It's amazing. You'd think a company would unit test its products before releasing to the market.
I totally forgot about the clip. Yep, that was major FAIL. I don't use a belt clip anyhow, it's a good way for me to lose a phone.

rearranging the apps is as simple as clicking on one of them and holding down until the app icons shake. When they do, grab the one you want to move and drag it to wherever, even a different screen. Takes a little practice.
And in iTunes to see that screen, I believe it's somewhere in the sync section. Don't have it handy though, so can't be sure right now.
I found it and got it all cleaned up to my liking. I've not had luck dragging it to a different screen though, not quick enough I suppose.

Just hold it against the edge of the screen and it'll go.
So do any of you have the 4 yet? Have you noticed problems with reception or overheating? Just curious, as I've seen some reports make the rounds, and people will be asking me very shortly whether they should be upgrading. coming from a 3G I can say it is ALOT FASTER. Apps load in no time, the new screen is AMAZING! It is SUPER BRIGHT and SUPER CLEAR. Have had no problems of overheating or bad reception. The battery lasts longer too. Was at 99% at 1400 today, at 1800 was at 93% with moderate use. Playing Pandora in the background for almost 45 minutes made it drop from 96-94. Very impressed with it so far.

I'm that crazy. Everyone sold out yesterday. AT&T had no free stock, Radio Shack, Best Buy and WalMart all had very meager stock. Apple store probably sold 1,500-2,000 yesterday. AT&T will have SOME stock on Tuesday, Apple said they don't expect anything until Monday. However, those who go to the Apple store THIS MORNING may get some as anyone who had a reservation but did not show yesterday, lost the hold on their device last night.
It seems that this (the antenna issue) is not an isolated problem. Enough people have now emailed Jobs about it that he has a form letter being sent out via email for each one. But initially, when the website Engadget noticed the issue and contacted Jobs about it, his response was documented.

I think Aram doesn't wash his hands or something. Mine just keeps reading 5 bars.
Jobs is notorious for responding to something like this, but this time he should've keep his mouth shut until he had researched liability and recall issues.
I predict vouchers for free cases or protective film.
So if I'm reading it right the metal band that runs around the entire edge of the device can't be held or it trashes the reception. (for at least some people?)
Every phone with an integrated antenna has at least some spot you ought not cover with your hand for best reception.

The metal band around the phone is actually two antennas.
Some people are reporting signal loss if placing their hand a certain way. Any light bit of research will note that hand placement has had some effect on some units of every model handset since the bag phone. I've had people bringing it up all day and I still can't make it drop a single bar.

The first day my 3GS seemed slow, but now it blazes. I've heard the same from several people that it seems to slow down for a day or two and then works just fine. I don't understand why this would happen, but then again, Apple is using alien technology, so it may have to do with planetary alignment.

I have read on several other forums that if you have a 3G iphone, and its running slow after updating to IOS4, to do a Hard Reset twice in a row (done by holding both the home key and lock button on the top) till the screen goes black. I personally havent updated my 3g yet since I got the iphone4, but again, I have read this on multiple forums and it is said it clears out the old cache and a few other things. Give that a try if your 3g is still running slow after the update.

Yeah, too bad the required one flash update immediately after shipping because the memory card wasn't writeable, now they are having to block a second flash update because it bricks the whole phone. Plus there is the whole "portions of the screen not working" issue.. and the "screen coming apart" issue. The 4G is worthless in 97% of the country as well. There has been no major rollout yet, and testing has shown that even if you are in a 4G market, you get better speeds by disabling 4G and using 3G unless you are within a few hundred yards of the tower.
EVO was a lot of promise that didn't deliver.

Sprint making waves about another provider's service is a strange thing.
What I don't understand is that Microsoft said that one of the problems with Windows Mobile was that it was getting diluted and hard to support due to all of the versions and pieces of hardware, so they are limiting devices that will get Windows 7. Android is going farther the other way.
This chart was done before Froyo (the current version, 2.2) was released but as you can see, most everyone using android is a point older OS (1.x) Part of this is do to HTC throwing SenseUI on top of Android, meaning HTC has to build new packages for every release for their devices.
While I would say Microsoft is in the middle, Apple is on the other end of the spectrum, and you definitely can't beat them at adoption rates of their versions(3.1.2 and 3.1.3 are feature-identical):

Backflip was at&t's half-hearted attempt at an Android phone, which many believe they deliberately crippled to protect iPhone sales.
I expect that to change when CDMA iPhones start coming out with Verizon... but then us Okies are going to discover how under-built Verizon's network is in this area.
It's also going to be funny when existing iPhone users think they can jump ship and just start using their GSM investment on Verizon.

I haven't had that problem (with the battery life) leaving it on. I do moderate app/web usage on the phone (not a lot of 3G stuff, mainly wifi at the house) and by the time bedtime rolls around, my phone is down to about 50 percent. I don't use the phone alot for calls, so that might be part of it as well.

I do moderate app/web usage on the phone (not a lot of 3G stuff, mainly wifi at the house) and by the time bedtime rolls around, my phone is down to about 50 percent. I don't use the phone alot for calls, so that might be part of it as well.
Calls? This thing makes calls?

Hmm, maybe that's why I don't have reception issues with my iPhone. I kind of forgot about that function.

Thanks, Siri is awesome!
I just wish that apple had the voice to text built into the mail and messaging apps like Android does.
Well.. Apple recently bought Siri... So....
Anybody here using Verizon? I have Droid envy. I think I'm about to jump on the Droid X or maybe wait for Droid 2. I hate AT&T, but I'd stay with them if they had a phone I wanted.

I have a couple of friends here who have Verizon (don't have any of the smart phones) that sort of lament leaving AT&T. You know those Verizon Wireless commercials with the "Can you hear me now" dude?
Evidently not so much around NE Oklahoma.
I mark that up to growing pains though, since they're pretty much a new player here. But I sure wouldn't want to use them. AT&T, for all its evils, is built up quite nicely and I've never really had any network or phone issues with them. But I did start with them when they called themselves Cingular.

AT&T got a real Android phone a week or too ago. When the iPhone goes multi-carrier, you can expect more android phones on AT&T.
Here's a comparison chart for you on which droid to get:

Did you not ever notice that they never played the other end of that phone call?
"can you hear me now?"
"he... yo.... ere? ...lo? ... hel..."
Man, you can't buy publicity like this. An Oklahoma band decides to film a music video with the iPhone 4, and it looks really good:

I just reposted it on AppAdvice.com (a site about Apple mobile devices and apps) which should get them a lot more publicity.

I saw that before and it's fairly accurate except for the cash part. I've always been able to sell my and my wife's old iPhones for about what the new ones cost when I upgrade. For example, in the last two years I bout 3 iPhones totaling $600, but sold the old ones for $530. So basically my iPhone habit has cost me $17.50/yr per phone.
FYI - 2 Droid X's on the way. I was considering a switch because of the limited hardware at AT&T. I had some friends that were happy with Verizon, after steady improvement in the last couple of years. Then this last week I probably had at least %30 of my calls drop or have some quality issues. I have had enough - time to try something new!
It's all fine with me, I don't have a iphone and don't even want one. :-\

My problem with Verizon (other than the speeds they tried to pass off as acceptable when they first came to town) is that I want a smartphone to be a smartphone. Not smart OR phone. I don't want to have to hang up a conference call to check my email and on CDMA networks you can't do data and phone simultaneously.

Add a deck of cards, a Texas Instrument calculator, a pad of paper, and you have all sorts of useful apps with that.
This was supposedly made for a Taiwanese News Channel.
