Most technical references like engineering handbooks are the same price on CD/DVD as in hard copy paper. The cost of production appears to be irrelevant. They are selling intellectual material. At least that's my guess.

Yes, but the intellectual material is free on their website if you don't want the layout. You're paying for the layout.
Insufficient reference to "They" on my part. I was still referring to the technical handbooks.
I appreciate that the actual news from TW is still without direct cost. I get the paper at home so I have no guilt about reading on line for free.

Print newspapers have just become too expensive to buy every day, and $2.00 for a Sunday Paper is over the top, many folks don't buy 'em any more. I remembr the days of the 10 cent newspaper and the 25 cent Sunday Paper. Even worse there is not much in them, just alot of ads- Yep,
What cracks me up is one day I went to KTUL.com and got abreast of all the news in about oh... 5min.
Then for whatever reason I had the TV on and the 6'oclock news came on. It took 30min to cover what I had done in 5 min myself.
Why anyone would want to sit thru local news or fumble with a printed newspaper is a bit beyond me considering how quickly and easily it is to drill down to what you're interested in on the net.

Local news is a background noise while preparing dinner.
A printed paper offers more opportunities for something to catch your peripheral vision. It can also be used for kitty litter or lining the bottom of a bird cage.

I find it handy for fire starter.
PDF does not offer them the ability to track readers, the electronic edition does. Each story viewed and each anchor you skip to is recorded along with your IP address. This way they can track what you are interested in for advertising placement and marketing.
They can develop user profiles for the registered users and target marketing campaigns to guests. With this level of data they can also sell lists based on your interests if they choose to. Soon you will notice that the pages you view will include advertisements geared to your interests rather than just general advertising, and they will be able to sell that service to their advertisers.
The pdf format they were using only allowed them to track you by section. Now they will be able to track you by story and log how much time you spend on each story that interests you.

Me, neither. I take the print edition and with that comes free registration on the website as well as the ability to search the archives back into the early nineties.
It's free to register anyway...oops...but I don't think you can do archive searches unless you're a subscriber.
If this is like the crap that the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette uses: DO NOT WANT.
One of the World employees in the comments mentioned an iPad/Kindle version coming soon.
I still don't understand people that want to pay more for day old news?
