Two of my uncles waded ashore in Normandy.  They never talked about it.  Kipling aptly described it as 'seeing the elephant.'

I don't know anyone who was there, but my grade-school principal was at Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal. He never talked about it, either.

And the guy in my hometown who made sure that the Memorial Day ceremonies went smoothly almost had his leg shot off in Korea and was left on the battlefield for nearly three days until his buddies could get to him. He spent 18 months in a hospital, walked with a big limp the rest of his life, and eventually drank a lot just to ease the pain.

Listen to 4:40 on, espcially 5:38 to 5:48, to me this speaks volumes of equality, that we are united against one in this offenseive in WWII.
