I have one. It's the absolute finest in "box with a lid on top and a hole in the bottom" technology.

Ok. I'm ignorant. Please tell me what this does. I've been contemplating digging a hole in the ground for compost. What does this do? With my dog, I don't have a whole lot of room for a whole that he can't get to.

it turns carbon (dead leaves) and nitrogen (grass clippings) into compost (dirt).

A real compost bin involves putting your green stuff (grass clippings) in with your organic food waste (peels and such) and then the whole thing basically cooks. Stir it occasionally and you get good fertilizer/soil additive.

The other posters are correct about what happens. I wouldn't recommend digging a hole in the ground, though--in addition to carbon and nitrogen, it takes lots of air (and water) for those things to break down into compost. Putting it in a hole would prevent that from happening, so if you don't want a bin, you can make a nice pile in a corner of your yard. Turn/stir it every once in a while to make sure air is getting to the middle of the pile, and in no time, you'll have great soil for your garden!
