DolfanBob brought up an interesting idea about discussing the meaning of usernames. Some of them are based on the actual user's name; others are based on interests. So, I'm curious to know: what does your username mean?
TURobY - When I joined this site, I was still a student at TU. My first name is Robert, and my last name is Young. Sometimes, people misread my handle as "Turbo". :P
Mine's my last name. Nothing exciting for me. I jabber if I try to be creative.
Thanks for starting this thread.
As I said. I am a huge Miami Dolphins fan and have been DolfanBob for years.

I was giving a speech at a school twenty plus years ago about recycling. A little girl in the audience asked me if my mother named me Michael to rhyme with recycle. A newspaper reporter wrote it and I have been called it ever since.
Never much on nicknames, but about 15 years ago a friend of mine starting calling me Hoss. It stuck with a lot of people and became my moniker on many other forums. Hoss though tends to be pretty popular, especially in the south, so I had to register with a forum relatively early in order to get it.
And no, it doesn't mean I'm big as Hoss from "Bonanza".
I'm close, though. ;D

Need I say more?
Actually mine came from auto racing. My chassis repair guy started calling me "Conan The Destroyer" or someone at his shop did. 71 was the number I usually had on my race cars, so there's my handle. Due to common friends from multiple walks of life, the nickname carried over into motorcycle riding and other areas as well. That was 26 years ago. Half the people I know call me Conan the others call me by my real name, even my mother calls me Conan from time to time.
I have noooo idea. :P
I spent some time in deep Looooosiana and fell in love with the people. Later, I operated airboats just like Adam Sandlers mom in Waterboy. It was a gesture towards my love of boating.
Because I'm a geek. Seriously. I'm an old gamer, and with MMORPG's I wanted something that stuck out and was different. I went with latin, and Guardian of the Night. I know, corny, but I have found that it is always available when I need to make a username so I keep using it, though lately I've gotten lazy and started using Custos on more things.
Pretty obvious on mine....got me in some trouble back when Friendly Bear was pooping in these woods.
My nick dates back to 1997/1998 from Final Fantasy Tactics add a little complex and a random number and you get my nick. Back when I started using the nick boko or boco was popular so I had to add numbers. Sometimes that wasn't enough and at the time I thought of myself as a real hard core gamer hence the handle. I still use it today because I am lazy, and its a brand in its own right.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one to bring my gaming name into here lol
Godboko71, I'd wondered how you came up with yours. I'd love to know where Michael71 came up with his "71". I doubt there's many other forums on the interwebs with three members who have 71 as the last two digits of their handle. The reason #71 became my favored number in the first place was a racing hero of mine. I think Breadburner might still remember who that was.

It was either godboko71, boko, boko71, something lame like Game Master (had friends back in the day call me that hated it,) or rtown oh I am so creative :P
Though I am known by godboko71 the best so I try to use it everywhere.

Neil Bonnett or Dave Marcis?
Company I worked for when I signed up used first initial + last name for email so Scott Grizzle = sgrizzle here.
also twitter.com/sgrizzle facebook.com/sgrizzle flickr.com/photos/sgrizzle etc
My username is an early AOL address. I used to be active in theater doing stage and lighting design. My girlfriend at the time (a graphic artist) was using DesignIdea so I went with StageIdea.

Thinking back I guess 71 wasn't as random as I thought, my uncle used to do motocross (4444) anyway someone else (name escapes me) I used to follow back then was number 71.

Mike Peters, Tulsa Speedway 1975 Modified champion. He had a long and productive career in supers and sprint cars after moving up the following year. I think he was still active until a few years ago and may even still race every now and then.
This is a great thread topic.

I didn't run off any of the women....but who did? Sheesh...any minorities?
Where's Guido come from?
Self explanatory: Nathan Mills. ;)
I used to register to almost everything with a pseudonym, but I largely stopped that a couple of years back, although I still use it on a bunch of other forums and a pseudo-homophone on twitter and some other social networkingish sites.
I've posted a lot of stupid stuff under that pseudonym, but I have a good excuse: I started using it when I was 14 in the early days of the Internet.

Back in the early 1980s, I worked at a movie theater which sold these bizarre triangular shaped push up frozen icee sorta thing and they were either made by or called "Guido's". I ate tons of those over one summer, so much so people started calling me guido. My undergrad college buddies still call me that today. Pretty lame I know.
Mine's a remnant of my first AOL e-mail address, way back in the Ice Age (and dial-up access).
It was computer-generated, because an e-mail address using my full name wasn't available.
It's boring, but that's the story.

I wish I could remember the name of the guy that lived behind me that raced every weekend at the speedway. It might have been one of the Hahn's (I went to elementary school with a kid with that last name and remember him being related to Emmitt).

I went to school with his son Tommy Hahn, and the daughter of Fox Temple (I think it was Fox)

When I was in college, my friends and I noticed that people had the best conversations after about 2:00 am (unless they were too drunk to chat..). That's when all the philosophical discussions, interesting stories, and deep thoughts took place.
We thought it would be cool if you could get paid to just sit around and think and discuss interesting topics...because we thought we had talent in this area. ;) (We were all getting ready to graduate and take various boring, entry-level jobs.) As a joke, we made up fake business cards for a company called Ponder Inc. The tagline was: "We're the ones who wonder why."

I've often pondered how you came up with that handle
I've gotta jump in here...mine is Led Zep, of course, but I have great memories of me and my dad cruising around east Tulsa in the 80's with the windows down and KMOD blaring. I never knew what New Kids on the Block sang or any soft pop songs because I was always into classic rock.

Well, I will jump in here, too. Nothing very interesting. Just a nod toward Heironymous Bosch (sp?) and then something green and leafy that tastes good and has a cadence. P to separate the two.
There are free trade magazines in industries I have worked in over the years. Had to have a name to keep real name off the lists and could use it as a way to see who sells names and who doesn't.
Makes a great name for a pet dog, too. Just not right now.

I was voting for the late 60s movie: "Can Heironymous Merkin Ever Forget Mercy......"
Good movie.
Good guess.
But no. It's a nod toward the artist. And he probably would have fit better in the late 60's.
Mine is actually Apache....."Brave with large lodge-pole"....
